Chargers Hold off Late Goldey-Beacom Rally for 62-52 Win

WILMINGTON, Del. - The University of New Haven women's basketball team survived a late 15-0 run to hold off Goldey-Beacom for a 62-52 victory on Sunday. The win moves the Chargers to 9-4 on the year and gives them their first three-game winning streak of the season. Four Chargers scored in double figures, led by senior Katia Oge (New City, N.Y./Immaculate Heart Academy) who scored a season-high 14 points along with six rebounds and two blocks on 5-of-8 shooting. Sophomore Brie Pergola (Torrington, Conn./Torrington) added 13 points on 5-of-9 shooting, and three assists. Senior Alexandria Kerr (Montclair, N.J./Montclair) recorded her third double-double of the season with 12 points, and team-highs of 12 rebounds, four assists and five steals. Junior Micah Wormack (Cumberland, Md./Allegany) added 10 points, seven rebounds, four steals and three blocks. Redshirt freshman Luzdali Ocasio (Davenport, Fla./New Hampton) put up season-highs of seven points and five rebounds.

New Haven dominated 40-18 in the paint and outscored the Lightning 21-0 in bench points. The Chargers finished the game shooting 42.9 percent (24-for-56) from the field, while holding Goldey-Beacom to 34.5 percent shooting.

QUARTER 1

·         The Lightning got off to a quick start by taking a 7-2 lead, but Kerr and Wormack sank back to back treys to get the Chargers within one.

·         Kerr gave New Haven its first lead at 10-9 with a basket in the paint at the 3:10 mark.

·          Wormack answered a GBC three-pointer with a turnaround floater to knot the game 12-12.

·         Goldey-Beacom took a 14-12 lead into the second on a pair of free throws with four seconds remaining.

QUARTER 2

·         Kerr found Oge with a pass in the lane to give New Haven the lead once more 18-16, then Luzdali Ocasio (Davenport, Fla./New Hampton) made it five straight for the Chargers  with a left wing three-pointer to make it 21-16 at the 6:14 mark.

·         Oge came away with a block on the defensive end, leading to offense as Pergola fed Kerr up ahead in transition to make it 25-18, and Pergola followed with a jumper to increase the run to 11-2, forcing a Goldey-Beacom timeout with 3:02 left until halftime.

·         Pergola got the lead to a half-high 12 in the closing seconds by swishing in a pull-up jumper on the baseline to make it 33-21 at the break.

·         New Haven closed the half on a 17-5 run overall and shot  52.9 percent in the frame, outscoring GBC 21-7.

QUARTER 3

·         Goldey-Beacom started the second half by scoring 11 of the first 18 points to get within 40-32, capped off by a three-point play.

·         The Chargers responded to the timeout by going on a 10-2 run over the rest of the quarter.

·         Kerr got the lead back to double-digits with a layup on the first New Haven possession following the timeout. Oge followed with her own layup off a Pergola assists to make it 44-32 with 3:46 to go.

·         DeBose found Wormack down in the low post for a layup over two defenders to grow the lead to 14 for the first time at 47-32, and Oge increased the edge with a free throw on the ensuing possession.

·         The Chargers grew the run to 10-2 as Oge used three free throws on two separate trips to the charity stripe over the final 1:31 to build a 50-34 lead after three quarters.

QUARTER 4

·         After nearly three scoreless minutes, DeBose and Oge used consecutive baskets to get the lead to 20 for the first time at 6:19.

·         A Cubbage jumper gave New Haven a game-high 21-point edge, 58-37, with 4:39 remaining.

·         The Lightning though, refused to go quietly, rattling off eight straight points over the next 1:40 to get within 58-45, forcing a New Haven timeout with 2:55 remaining.

·         Two free throws from Alanna Speaks got the Lightning within 11 at 58-47 with 1:36 on the clock.

·         After a Chargers turnover, Sarah Round hit a triple to get within 58-50, and Round turned another Charger miscue into two points with to make it 58-52 with 49 seconds left.

·         After knuckling down and getting a defensive stop, Pergola made it a three-possession game at 60-52 on two free throws with 30 seconds remaining.

·         Wormack helped ice the game away by picking off a pass down low in the lane, and sinking two free throws down the stretch to secure the 10-point victory.

New Haven will return home for its next contest on Wednesday, January 2 at 5:30 p.m. for a non-conference matchup against Dominican. All the action with be streamed live on the Chargers Sports Network.
