Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Offensive Bursts Power Women's Basketball Past Bloomfield, 59-41

BLOOMFIELD, N.J. – Three scorers for the University of New Haven women's basketball team (11-13, 6-12 NE10) finished in double figures as the Chargers breezed by the Bloomfield College Bears (13-11, 13-3 CACC) in a non-conference game on Tuesday evening at the Bloomfield College Gymnasium. With the victory, New Haven closes out its non-conference schedule with a 5-1 record, while Bloomfield fell to 0-8 in its penultimate non-conference bout.

In its best defensive effort of the season, New Haven surrendered a season-low 41 points against its opponent, besting the 43 points allowed against Saint Michael's on Jan. 9. The Chargers led for a majority of the contest and were ahead by as many as 21 points, as freshman Brie Pergola (Torrington, Conn./Torrington) led all scorers with 19 points. Pergola was excellent from the floor, shooting 70 percent (7-of-10 FG) with two three-pointers while also pulling down six rebounds with four assists. Senior Quana Smith (Bronx, N.Y./Harry S. Truman) also dished out four assists that led to 10 total points.

Junior Alexandria Kerr (Montclair, N.J./Montclair) notched her second double-double of the season with 18 points and a season-high 11 rebounds. The performance was Kerr's seventh-straight game of scoring 15 points, now needing just 10 points to reach the 1,000 career-point milestone.

Finally joining Pergola and Kerr in double digits was senior Khayla Trowell (Temple Hills, Md./Elizabeth Seton Catholic) who net 10 points with two three-pointers and also had three boards and three steals. Junior Allieyah Cubbage (North Plainfield, N.J./Roselle Catholic) led New Haven with four steals and sophomore Micah Wormack (Cumberland, Md./Allegany) finished the game with nine rebounds.

FIRST QUARTER NOTES:
  • The game was tied, 2-2, before Bloomfield put in a layup for their only lead of the game. Cubbage and Pergola scored on two-straight jump shots as New Haven got the lead and never looked back for the remainder of the matchup.
  • Cubbage's jumper marked the first of four offensive bursts in the game, as New Haven went on a 9-0 run that spanned just about four minutes to open up an early seven-point lead.
  • Bloomfield's Ilysia Lewis scored six in a row for the Bears, before Kerr added two points with eight seconds left in the first stanza to preserve the three-point lead at the first break.

SECOND QUARTER NOTES:
  • After Kerr's layup to end the first, both her and Pergola teamed up for an 11-0 run that stretched until the 6:22 minute mark of the second frame. During the spurt, Kerr scored four points and Pergola scored seven as she reached double figures in under 15 minutes of action.
  • With New Haven leading by 12, Bloomfield went 5-of-8 from the floor while forcing five New Haven turnovers over the final six minutes of the frame to get back within four points just before the midway point.
  • The quarter did however, result in New Haven outscoring the Bears, 14-12, with New Haven shooting 40 percent from the field at halftime.

THIRD QUARTER NOTES:
  • Lewis tied the game up herself to open up the third with five-straight points, but New Haven's 10-0 run in a three-and-a-half-minute span gave New Haven a cushion while heading into the later minutes of the game.
  • The Chargers kept the ball moving to help the scoring, as all three of the next field goals scored by Pergola, Trowell and junior Sianna Van Dyke (Kingston, N.Y./Kingston) were all assisted on by three different Chargers.
  • Following two Bloomfield scores in back-to-back possessions, New Haven responded with four points to enter the final frame up by five.

FOURTH QUARTER NOTES:
  • The Bears got two buckets sandwiched around a Pergola layup, but a final 16-0 blast by New Haven proved to be too much for the Bears. In those three-and-a-half minutes, New Haven held Bloomfield to 0-of-4 from the field and took advantage on their end on 6-of-8 shooting with two three pointers and two free throws, extending the lead to 21 points.
  • In that run, Kerr went off for eight points while Trowell and Wormack each contributed with four.
  • The Chargers finished the game shooting 39 percent, while the defense came up big in the final stanza as Bloomfield went 2-of-13 from the field and 0-of-4 from three-point range in the final 10 minutes.

Next up for the Chargers is a very important conference game against American International on Saturday, Feb. 17 at 1:30 pm. Prior to the game, New Haven will honor its two seniors; Smith and Trowell. Following that game, New Haven will close out the regular season schedule at Le Moyne on Tuesday, Feb. 20.
