SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The University of New Haven women's basketball team (12-14, 7-13 NE10) got a team-high 13 points from sophomore
Micah Wormack (Cumberland, Md./Allegany), but the efforts fell short as the Chargers dropped the regular season finale to the Le Moyne Dolphins (16-10, 12-8 NE10), 63-52, at Ted Grant Court on Tuesday evening.
Wormack was also the leading scorer against Le Moyne earlier this season, as she net 13 points tonight on 6-of-12 shooting from the field. Wormack was also one of three Chargers who grabbed a team-best five rebounds in the game along with junior
Allieyah Cubbage (North Plainfield, N.J./Roselle Catholic) and junior
Alexandria Kerr (Montclair, N.J./Montclair).
Freshman
Brie Pergola (Torrington, Conn./Torrington) shot 36 percent from the floor, finishing in double figure scoring with 11 points and two assists. Cubbage and Kerr rounded out the top four scorers were nine and seven points, respectively.
New Haven dominated on the offensive boards, grabbing 13 offensive rebounds against Le Moyne's six, leading to 11 second chance points. Le Moyne on the other hand had the edge from the field, making 50 percent of shots while New Haven converted on 36 percent. Finally, New Haven took care of the ball slightly better than the Dolphins, only committing 14 turnovers while causing 16.
FIRST QUARTER NOTES:
- Wormack made the first bucket of the game for New Haven at the 8:20 mark before Le Moyne scored five-straight points to jump out to an early 11-2 lead. After the Dolphins held the Chargers scoreless for nearly three minutes, Wormack assisted on a Pergola jump shot before Kerr hit a layup with 3:56 remaining to cut the lead back to seven.
- Le Moyne closed out the quarter on an 8-0 run to lead by fifteen at the first break.
SECOND QUARTER NOTES:
- Kerr scored first to open up the second stanza and Pergola connected on another jumper on the next Charger possession, but Le Moyne scored nine-straight to stretch out the lead midway through the quarter.
- Over the next two and a half minutes, Pergola, senior Quana Smith (Bronx, N.Y./Harry S. Truman) and Wormack each put in field goals, but Le Moyne made a jump shot with two seconds remaining as New Haven found themselves down by 20 at the half, 37-17.
THIRD QUARTER NOTES:
- New Haven saw its best shooting in the third quarter, making 50 percent of shots from the field (7-for-14) to outscore the Dolphins, 17-12.
- Le Moyne scored the first two buckets out of the locker room, but New Haven punched out seven straight points in under two minutes when three different Chargers added two points each. After each team successfully made two free throws, four of the next field goal belonged to New Haven as the Chargers found themselves back within 13 points of the lead with a minute left in the third.
FOURTH QUARTER NOTES:
- New Haven outscored Le Moyne once again in the fourth, using a game-best 18 points in a quarter to pull back within 11 by the end of the contest.
- Wormack converted on a three-point play with six minutes remaining followed by a Cubbage layup to further cut into the Dolphin lead. Wormack made a layup again with 4:51 remaining, but Le Moyne drained a three-pointer to tame the Chargers. Cubbage and Pergola each scored two more points, the Dolphins converted on a three-point play, and New Haven closed out the game on a 6-2 run to finalize the 63-52 score.
- Trowell closed out her career scoring New Haven's final three points on an and-one layup, making the free throw with eight seconds left.
- In the second half, New Haven shot 43 percent and was 11-of-15 from the free throw line. The Chargers also dominated on the glass in the second half, 19-12.
- Wormack scored nine of her 13 points in the second half, while Cubbage scored all nine of her points after the intermission.
Following the game, New Haven's season came to a close due to Saint Rose upsetting Pace, 51-49, as the Golden Knights claimed the fifth and final seed in the NE10 tournament. The Blue and Gold concludes the 2017-18 season with a 12-14 overall record while finishing out the NE10 with a 7-13 mark.
