WEST HAVEN, Conn. – In a battle of top-10 squads, the No. 8 University of New Haven women's lacrosse team dropped a 19-4 decision to the visiting No. 2 Adelphi University Panthers on Tuesday night at Kathy Zolad Stadium. Leading the Chargers on the day was junior attack Samantha Galler (Marshfield, Mass./Marshfield) who scored a pair of New Haven's tallies.
Galler was one of three goal scorers for the Chargers as she has now scored at least one goal in all five games in 2018. Joining her in notching a goal for the Blue and Gold was junior midfielder Mackenzie Reh (Medford, N.Y./Patchogue Medford) and sophomore midfielder Kendra Nolan (Oak Ridge, N.J. /Jefferson Township ). Reh also added an assist to finish with two points, while senior attack Jessica Mazliah (Holbrook, N.Y./Sachem North) also finished with two points, both of which came on assists. With her goal and assist against the Panthers, Reh has now scored and assisted on at least one occasion in all five games.
Sophomore Gianna Guerra (Thiells, N.Y./North Rockland) started between the pipes for New Haven, closing out just over 57 minutes of work with 13 saves, her second time this season finishing with double figures stops. Her classmate, Erica Rinsky (North Caldwell, N.J./West Essex) closed out the night for the Chargers and she also recorded one save.
New Haven opened the scoring on the night after more than seven scoreless minutes between the two teams. Over that stretch, the Chargers forced Adelphi into a pair of turnovers while Guerra came up big on a pair of occasions, while she faced three total shots in the opening seven minutes. The second turnover in that span came courtesy of a caused turnover credited to Marie Cox (Hamden, Conn./Hamden), while on the opposite end of the field, the Chargers used less than a minute to convert their first score of the night, which came from Galler thanks to a pass from Reh.
Exactly three minutes later, the Panthers would respond with their first tally of the night, which sparked a run of five straight before the Blue and Gold found the back of the net for a second time. This time around it came courtesy of Reh who converted a free position attempt.
Adelphi would answer again nearly 60 seconds later as they would again muster a rally, this time three straight before Nolan picked up her lone goal of the contest courtesy of the first assist of the evening from Mazliah. New Haven managed one more goal before the end of the opening half as Mazliah worked her magic again, this time around connecting with Galler for her second score of the evening.
The Panthers would then hold New Haven scoreless over the final 31 minutes, including the full second half period as they built a double digit lead and never looked back.
New Haven will return to action on Saturday, March 24 when they begin a short two-game road trip with a visit to North Andover, Mass. for a date with the Merrimack Warriors. Opening draw against Merrimack is slated for 1:00 p.m. at the newly completed Merrimack Stadium.
