Eight-Goal Run Helps No. 14 Women's Lacrosse Soar Over Molloy

WEST HAVEN, Conn. – The No. 14 University of New Haven women's lacrosse team snapped its three-game skid, coming away with a 19-12 victory over the Molloy Lions in non-conference action on Saturday at Kathy Zolad Stadium.

Seven different Chargers scored on the afternoon, with junior Mackenzie Reh (Medford, N.Y./Patchogue Medford) leading the Chargers with five goals and two assists, matching her highest point-total of the season with seven. Senior Jessica Mazliah (Holbrook, N.Y./Sachem North) buried a season-high four goals and assisted on another, while sophomore Caroline Maher (Mansfield, Mass./Mansfield) also talled five points with three goals and two assists. Also collecting a pair of goals on the day was junior Samantha Galler (Marshfield, Mass./Marshfield) and juniors Kendra Nolan (Oak Ridge, N.J. /Jefferson Township ) and Julia Jette (Franklin, Mass./Franklin).

Sophomore Raven Linton (Lawrenceville, N.J./Notre Dame) led the way on the draw with eight draw controls and also netted one goal on the day. Nolan pulled down seven draw controls, while Reh added five.

As a team, New Haven was a perfect 19-19 on clear attempts and also dominated on the draw, pulling down 21 total draw controls against Molloy's 12. The Chargers also had the edge on ground balls, 27-20, and totaled 15 more shots than Molloy, 40-25.

In goal, sophomore Erica Rinsky (North Caldwell, N.J./West Essex) got the start and eventually earned the win, making one save in the first 30 minutes of action. Classmate Gianna Guerra (Thiells, N.Y./North Rockland) saw the second half in between the pipes out the final 30 minutes to preserve the Charger lead for the remainder of the contest, stopping six Lion shots in the process.

It was a high-scoring affair from the opening draw, as the Chargers struck first just 36 seconds into the contest and added a second tally 31 seconds later to take a 2-0 advantage during the first 67 seconds. The Lions answered quickly, however, taking a 4-3 lead at the 24:06 mark thanks to three tallies from Jessica Markowitz and one goal by Ali Pfeifer.

The action continued as New Haven scored twice in 31 seconds again less than 10 minutes into the contest to retake the lead, but the Lions continued to counter the Charger attack. Molloy netted three goals in a span of 1:50 to jump ahead 7-5 midway through the half and looked to be building momentum back in their favor before the Chargers took control.

The Blue and Gold dominated during the second half of the opening period, ending the half on a 6-0 run behind three goals by Reh and a Jette tally in the closing seconds to take an 11-7 lead into the halftime break. The run continued to begin the second half, as New Haven scored the first two goals, while continuing to hold Molloy scoreless for 23:24 before Brianna Wilson broke the streak with a Lions goal at the 21:19 mark of the second stanza.

It was back-and-forth action from there, as neither team scored more than two consecutive goals and the Chargers held on for the 19-12 victory, improving to 4-4 on the season.

The Chargers return to action on Tuesday, April 3 when they host Pace University in NE-10 action at Kathy Zolad Stadium, with the opening draw set for 7:00 p.m.
