POMONA, N.J. – The University of New Haven women's tennis team (8-9) captured its second win of the spring season with an 8-1 victory over Stockton University on Friday at the Stockton University Tennis Courts. With the win, head coach Hannah Still and the Chargers have earned the most wins in a school year since the year 2005 when the Blue and Gold also posted eight wins.
The Blue and Gold swept doubles competition and was led by the No. 3 doubles pair of sophomores Shelby Clyne (Islip Terrace, N.Y./East Islip) and Angela Mercurio (Bay Shore, N.Y./Islip), who shut out Taylor Searles and Amanda El-Khurri, 8-0. No. 1 doubles saw the freshman duo of Stephanie Gonzalez (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico/Academia Maria Reina) and Lilia Rodriguez (Bayamon, Puerto Rico/Colegio Marista) improved their doubles record this year to 8-6, defeating Summer Conover and Kristen McCormick (Galloway, N.J./Absegami) by an 8-2 score. Sophomore Nicole Calabrese (Staten Island, N.Y./Tottenville) and junior Caitlyn Burridge (Center Moriches, N.Y./Center Moriches) rounded out the doubles sweep with an 8-3 win over opponents Emily Steinberg and Maria Ibarra.
New Haven nearly swept singles competition, with five Chargers posting dominant wins over the Ospreys. At No. 1 singles, Gonzalez defeated Conover in straight sets, 6-1, 6-1, and Rodriguez posted a 6-1, 6-0 victory over McCormick at the No. 2 court. Mercurio took down Ibarra 6-1 in the first set and 6-0 in the second set at No. 3 singles, and junior Lauryn Burridge (Center Moriches, N.Y./Center Moriches) defeated Kaitlyn Emick, 6-3, 6-1 at No. 5 singles. At No. 6 singles, Clyne saw a 6-2, 6-1 win over El-Khurri. C. Burridge fought hard all match at No. 4 singles, just falling to Steinberg, 6-3 in the first set before bouncing back to win the second set 6-3. In the tiebreak, Burridge fell just short, dropping the deciding set, 10-7.
The women's tennis team will get back into action tomorrow, April 14 for a non-conference game against the St. Thomas Aquinas Spartans. Match time at the New Haven Tennis Courts is slated for 12:00 pm.
