BOSTON, Mass. – The University of New Haven women's tennis team (10-9) earned a convincing win over Simmons College (11-9), taking down the Sharks, 8-1 on the road on Saturday. The victory moved the Chargers above .500 on the season.
New Haven breezed through doubles action, sweeping Simmons 3-0 to kick off the match. Sophomores Stephanie Gonzalez (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico/Academia Maria Reina) and Lilia Rodriguez (Bayamon, Puerto Rico/Colegio Marista) as well as sophomore Nicole Calabrese (Staten Island, N.Y./Tottenville) and junior Caitlyn Burridge (Center Moriches, N.Y./Center Moriches) each took down their opponents, 8-3, while sophomores Shelby Clyne (Islip Terrace, N.Y./East Islip) and Angela Mercurio (Bay Shore, N.Y./Islip) blanked Michelle Medici and Kalen Michals, 8-0.
The Chargers continued their hot play in singles, with Gonzalez defeating Nickie Nguyen, 6-1 in the first set before blanking her opponent, 6-0 in the second set at No. 1 singles. Rodriguez also only allowed one game at No. 2 singles, with a 6-0, 6-1 triumph over Marissa Johnson. Mercurio took down Medici in back-to-back 6-1 sets at the No. 3 courts, and C. Burridge edged out Paola Rios, 6-4, 6-2 at No. 4 singles. Clyne kept up her domination at No. 6 singles with her fourth-straight win, blanking Michals with two-straight 6-0 sets. Junior Lauryn Burridge (Center Moriches, N.Y./Center Moriches) and Olivia Lakes each exchanged a set at No. 5 singles, before falling 11-9 in a close third-set tie break.
The women's tennis team will conclude its historic season on Tuesday, April 24 at the New Haven women's tennis courts with a Nutmeg State battle against the Post Eagles. Match time under the lights is slated for 7:00 pm.
