WEST HAVEN, Conn. – Junior shortstop Taylor Luzzi (Fishkill, N.Y./John Jay) drilled three of the Chargers five hits as the University of New Haven softball team dropped its regular season finale to the visiting Le Moyne Dolphins by a 2-1 margin. The Chargers who have secured the fourth seed in the upcoming Northeast-10 Conference Championship will await the opening round opponent with two games remaining in the regular season, a doubleheader between Pace and Saint Rose.
Luzzi's three hits, all singles, also led to an RBI as she knocked in the lone Chargers run in the third inning when her single to right center drove in junior second baseman Madison Derosia (Brattleboro, Vt./Brattleboro Union) who led off the frame with a double down the right field line. The only other New Haven hit was a two-out single to left from senior left fielder Tori Schiebe (Monroe, Conn./Masuk) in the bottom of the sixth.
In the circle, sophomore Megan Butts (West Chester, Pa./Henderson) threw a complete game, suffering the loss. Overall, Butts surrendered eight hits with both runs allowed earned. She also struck out four batters and did not issue a free pass.
Le Moyne opened up the scoring in the top of the first inning with three hits leading to a 1-0 lead. The second of those base knocks was a single up the middle from Peyton Bellrose. Luzzi's second hit of the day followed Derosia's double to open up the third inning with a run before an out was recorded. However, the Dolphins responded to that quick run forcing a pair of groundouts and an infield popup to strand Luzzi on second base.
The Blue and Gold would threaten again in the fourth and sixth innings thanks to three walks, however the Chargers were unable to place a runner beyond second base. Overall, New Haven had the benefit of six walks issued by Lauren Nichols, but the Chargers would end the game stranding seven runners on base.
