Hillman Homers Twice in Softball's Doubleheader Split with No. 23 Southern New Hampshire

MANCHESTER, N.H. – The University of New Haven softball team got back in to Northeast-10 action on Saturday afternoon, splitting a double header with the No. 23 Southern New Hampshire Penmen at the SNHU softball field on yet another cold spring afternoon. New Haven suffered a tough 4-3 defeat in game one, and bounced back to take game two with an 8-1 score.

Overall, the Chargers finished with 17 total hits on the day, including 11 in game two, just one hit short of tying the season-high. Freshman Jovanna Hillman (Seymour, Conn./Saint Joseph's) continued her solid rookie campaign at the plate, going 3-for-7 on the day with two home runs and four total RBI. Junior Sierra Whitlock (Woodbridge, Va./Woodbridge) tallied a team-high four hits, all of which occurred in game two, where she also drove in two runs and scored twice. Junior Taylor Luzzi (Fishkill, N.Y./John Jay) and freshman Alexa Hershberger (Ephrata, Pa./Ephrata) each collected a pair of hits and scored twice. Luzzi along with sophomore Marissa Colby (Charlton, Mass./Shepherd Hill) and junior Kristine Liptack (Trumbull, Conn./Trumbull) all drove in a run for the Blue and Gold.

Game 1: Southern New Hampshire 4, New Haven 3

After each team was held scoreless in the first inning, Hillman blasted a leadoff home run to center field, her sixth of the season, to put the Chargers ahead early. Luzzi notched a double to center field to keep the rally going, but the Penmen was able to halt that rally, retiring the next two Charger batters.

Southern New Hampshire quickly responded with two runs and would hold that lead for the remainder of the game, plating two runs on three hits in the bottom of the second inning. Over the next two innings, each team retired the side in order, before Southern New Hampshire scored an unearned run in the bottom of the fifth to gain a two-run advantage.

New Haven got off to a slow start in the top of the sixth with two-straight ground outs, but put together a solid two-out rally with four-straight singles, plating two runs on four hits in the stanza. Hershberger reached safely on a bunt before Colby singled through the left side, with junior Madison Derosia (Brattleboro, Vt./Brattleboro Union) replacing Colby as a pinch runner. The Chargers continued to chip away with Hillman and Liptack posting two-straight RBI singles, knotting the game up at three runs apiece.

Shay Sauvageau had the answer for the Penmen, homering in the bottom half of the sixth to give the home team the late go-ahead run. Southern New Hampshire added two more baserunners, but the Chargers executed a double play to end the inning before going three-up, three-down in the top of the seventh.

Sophomore Megan Butts (West Chester, Pa./Henderson) (6-7) suffered the loss, throwing 6.0 innings with two strike outs and three earned runs. Sara Lavalee was the winning pitcher for the Penmen.

Game 2: New Haven 8, Southern New Hampshire 1

New Haven charged back with an offensive explosion in game two, plating eight runs on 11 total hits. Taylor Luzzi (Fishkill, N.Y./John Jay) got on board first for the Chargers, ripping a triple and scoring on the throw in the top of the second. The Blue and Gold added two more runs in the next inning as Whitlock and Hershberger each singled to left field and scored on a passed ball and an RBI double to center field by Colby.

The Chargers added two runs in the top of the fourth as Whitlock singled home sophomore Alexandria Cunkle (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin) and senior Tori Schiebe (Monroe, Conn./Masuk), extending the lead to 5-1. Three innings later, Hillman launched her second home run of the day to center field, a two-run shot, before Luzzi scored on a Penmen throwing error.

Sophomore Kylie Stonebraker (Mechanicsville, Va./Lee-Davis High School) (6-8) was dominant in the circle, allowing only two hits over 5.2 innings pitched, striking out six. Butts came in for relief in the sixth inning and did not allow a hit during her 1.1 innings pitched.

Up Next:

The Chargers will return home and play Franklin Pierce tomorrow, Sunday April 8, for a conference doubleheader against the Franklin Pierce Ravens. The game was originally scheduled as an away game, but was moved to the New Haven softball field due to poor field conditions in Rindge. First pitch of the doubleheader is slated for 12:00 pm.
