BRACKETS

FLUSHING, N.Y. –
For the first time in program history, the University of New Haven women's tennis team competed at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) regionals held at the world-famous Billy Jean King National Tennis Center. The matches took place all day throughout Friday and Saturday.

Competing at ITA Regionals was graduate student Laura Fermosel (Colmenar Viejo, Spain/ÍES Rosa Chacel), sophomore Stephanie Gonzalez (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico/Academia Maria Reina), sophomore Lilia Rodriguez (Bayamon, Puerto Rico/Colegio Marista) and freshman Nicole Mika (Staten Island, N.Y./Laurel Springs). The weekend started off very well for all competitors in singles action. Gonzalez first defeated Chiara Dittrich from St. Thomas Aquinas, 8-3 on Friday morning. Shortly after, Mika edged out Antonella Lopez from NYIT by a score of 8-6. Rodriguez faced Brooke Fernandez from Le Moyne and battled to an 8-5 win. Fermosel received a bye in the qualifying bracket and did not have to play a singles match on Friday morning.

In the second round of qualifying singles matches, Gonzalez fought hard but eventually was defeated by Lauren Pearson of Merrimack, 9-8 (7-3). Mika also faced an opponent from Merrimack, falling to Cassie Restrepo, 8-3. Rodriguez played well against Tadi Mrewa from Concordia (N.Y.), but fell to her opponent, 9-7. Fermosel took the lone second-round win, sailing past Line Aasen from Queens (N.Y.), 8-3 to advance to Saturday's main draw, where she eventually dropped her match to Samantha Perri from Adelphi, 6-3, 6-0.

In doubles action late on Friday evening, Mika and Lilia fell to Marisa Ostoja and Louisa Brunetti from Queens (N.Y.) by a score of 8-3. Gonzalez and Fermosel played very well against tough opponents in Franzsika Putschbach and Kristel Kalm from Concordia (N.Y.), but fell by a tight 8-6 margin.

The women's tennis team will return to action on Wednesday, September 19 for a Northeast-10 conference match against the 2017 NE10 runner-up Stonehill Skyhawks. Match time is slated for 3:00 pm at the University of New Haven tennis courts.
