Chargers Top Saint Michael’s 69-57 on Class at the Court

WEST HAVEN, Conn. – Junior Micah Wormack (Cumberland, Md./Allegany) tallied her second straight double-double, senior Alexandria Kerr (Montclair, N.J./Montclair) scored 20 points and freshman Camryn DeBose (Wellington, Fla./Wellington Community) notched 19 points to help lead the New Haven women's basketball team past Saint Michael's 69-57 on Wednesday afternoon. The game was played in front of hundreds of students from the West Haven School District as part of the seventh annual Class at the Court. Wormack finished with 10 points and a team-high 11 rebounds, while Kerr and DeBose pulled down eight rebounds apiece. Junior Kim Talley (Quakertown, Pa./Lansdale Catholic) tied her career-high with nine points and added four rebounds in the win. Kerr tied her career-high with a game-best seven assists.

The Chargers shot over 48 percent from the field (27-for-56), while holding to Saint Michael's to just 32.8 percent shooting. New Haven was also 5-of-13 from beyond the arc and edged out the Purple Knights 43-31 in rebounds and 36-18 in the paint. The Chargers improve to 13-4 (6-3 NE10) with their seventh straight win, while Saint Michael's falls to 5-10 (1-9 NE10).

FIRST QUARTER

·         DeBose, who finished the game 7-of-10 overall and 4-for-5 from three-point range, started the game by hitting a trio of three-pointers within the first four minutes to help the Chargers build an 11-6 lead.

·         Saint Michael's pulled within two points on a pair of occasions, and drew within one point at 15-14 following a three with 3:41 left in the opening quarter.

·         Kerr and DeBose responded with back-to-back treys to help New Haven hold a 19-17 lead after one.

SECOND QUARTER

·         The Chargers quickly built up a nine-point advantage early in the second quarter, scoring nine of the first 11 points of the period. Wormack, Kerr and Katia Oge (New City, N.Y./Immaculate Heart Academy) all had layups, and DeBose connected on her fourth three-pointer in as many attempts to make it 28-19 with 7:48 left in the half.

·         Kerr got to the hoop and hit a layup while drawing a foul with just over five minutes left in the quarter. She hit the ensuing free throw to grow the lead to double digits for the first time, 31-21.

·         New Haven got the advantage back to 10 on two more occasions before halftime thanks to a jumper from Wormack, and a basket from Kerr in the paint with 54 seconds remaining to give the Chargers a 37-27 lead going into the locker room.

THIRD QUARTER

·         New Haven scored eight straight points early in the third quarter to build a 15-point lead. Talley sank a jumper outside the paint, Kerr used two free throws, then came down with a steal and fed Wormack for the fast break bucket to make it 45-30 New Haven, forcing a Saint Michael's timeout at the 7:35 mark.

·         Saint Michael's countered with an 11-0 run of their own, using offensive rebounds and second chance points to roar back to within 45-41 with 3:36 to play.

·         The Chargers answered with another big run of their own, closing the period by scoring the final 10 points to built the advantage back to 55-41 after three. Wormack had four points during the run, Kerr and DeBose scored two points each and Brie Pergola (Torrington, Conn./Torrington) capped the stretch with a jumper with 20 seconds left.

QUARTER 4

·         Saint Michael's broke the drought with a basket to open the fourth, but New Haven scored the next nine points to extend their run to 19-2 overall, and make the score 64-43 with 4:12 remaining.

·         Kerr hit a three-pointer during the run, with DeBose and Pergola adding two apiece from the free throw line, and Talley capping the run with a short jumper.

·         Aliyah Christy (Stratford, Conn./King Low Heywood Thomas) used two free throws to get the lead back to 20 with 3:51 left before Saint Michael's chipped away as part of an 11-3 run to close the game, using a last second shot to make the final score 69-57.

The Chargers will hit the road for a two-game swing to eastern Massachusetts beginning on Saturday afternoon at Bentley. Tipoff is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. with a livestream available on NE10 NOW.
