Five Score in Double Figures as Chargers’ Win Streak Snapped in 81-70 Setback at Franklin Pierce

RINDGE, N.H. – The University of New Haven men's basketball team fell 81-70 on Wednesday evening at Franklin Pierce, snapping the team's five game winning streak. All five starters scored in double figures for New Haven, led by junior Elijah Bailey (Freeport, N.Y./The Hotchkiss School) with 16 points. Derrick Rowland (Cohoes, N.Y./Green Tech) scored 15 points, Quashawn Lane (Trenton, N.J. /Trenton Catholic Academy) and Roy Kane, Jr. (Norwalk, Conn./Norwalk) added 12 points each and Kessly Felizor (Hightstown, N.J./Hightstown) scored 11. Kane, Jr. and Felizor led the team with eight rebounds apiece.

As a team, New Haven (13-6, 8-5 NE10) shot exactly 50 percent from the floor (28-of-56), but was outrebounded 31-26. The Ravens (10-10, 6-7 NE10) shot 54.4 percent from the field and forced 13 New Haven turnovers, outscoring the Chargers 19-14 off those miscues. Franklin Pierce's bench was a key factor throughout the game, outscoring the New Haven bench by a 40-4 margin.

FIRST HALF

·       The Chargers built up an 8-2 lead over the first 2:50 of regulation thanks to two points each from four different scorers.

·       Rowland and Bailey added back-to-back layups to up the advantage to 15-9 at the 14:18 mark.

·       The Ravens turned the tables and burst for a 13-0 run to take a 22-15 lead, forcing a New Haven timeout at 10:34.

·       Larcher connected on a layup following the break, and Felizor added a three-pointer to get back within 22-20.

·       Rowland added a jumper to make the deficit three, before the Ravens added five quick points to go up 30-22.

·       Lane added two straight layups and Kane, Jr. took a feed underneath and put in the easy layup to make it 30-28 with 4:05 left until halftime.

·       Larcher grabbed a steal in the lane and fed Kane, Jr. who took it the distance for two to get New Haven back within 32-30 with just over three minutes left to play in the half.

·       Franklin Pierce scored eight of the next 10 points to hold a 40-32 lead, and added a three-pointer with 18 seconds left to take a half-high, 43-34 lead.

·       Kane beat the halftime buzzer with a jumper to make the score 43-36 going into the locker room.

New Haven shot 50 percent in the opening half (15-for-30), while the Ravens hit at a 56.7 percent clip, including 8-for-16 from three-point range.

SECOND HALF

·       Felizor received a pass from Bailey, drove the baseline and finished with a slam to get the deficit back to single-digits at 55-46 at the 15:26 mark.

·       Trailing by 59-48, New Haven rattled off seven straight points, starting when Bailey hit a triple from beyond the arc on the right wing, and Larcher lobbed a long pass to Lane in stride for the fastbreak bucket to get back within 59-53. Bailey added a jumper to cut it to 59-55, forcing a Ravens timeout with 11:43 on the clock.

·       Franklin Pierce responded out of the break, scoring four quick points to build the lead back to eight before Rowland hit a deep three from down the middle to make it 65-60, but that was as close as the Chargers would get the rest of the way.

·       Franklin Pierce quelled the rally with an 8-0 streak of their own to take a 73-60 lead, capped by a steal and breakaway dunk with 6:06 to play.

·       Bailey's three-pointer and Kane, Jr's layup made it 73-65, and Lane fed Felizor off the steal, who used a reverse layup in transition to make it 77-70 with 2:27 left to cap the New Haven scoring.

The Chargers will return home to start a two-game homestand, beginning this Saturday with a matchup against Southern New Hampshire at 3:30 p.m.
