Football Comes Up Short at Saint Anselm 37-31

WEST HAVEN, Conn. – Despite a 41-yard rushing touchdown from Shamar Logan (Brooklyn, N.Y./High School for Youth & Community Development) with under five minutes to play, Saint Anselm rattled off a pair of touchdowns inside the final 3:30 to take a 37-31 decision over the New Haven football team (3-3, 2-2 NE10) under the lights on Saturday.

The Chargers racked up nearly 500 yards on offense with three of their four touchdowns coming as part of 266 rushing yards. The remaining touchdown for the Blue and Gold was a 31-yard pass from junior quarterback Christian Lupoli (Branford, Conn./Notre Dame) to graduate wide receiver Ju'an Williams (Springfield, Mass./Springfield Central) that was part of 233 passing yards. Kicker Michael Stalenyj (Piscataway, N.J./Piscataway) also added his fifth field goal of the season, drilling a 19-yarder on the opening drive of the second half.

Leading the Chargers rushing efforts on the night was sophomore Shamar Logan (Brooklyn, N.Y./High School for Youth & Community Development) whose number was called 29 time for a total of 175 net yards, including a pair of touchdowns. In addition to his 41-yard score, Logan also capped off a 73-yard drive in the first quarter with a five yard scamper into the end zone. That opening score for Logan was part of two touchdowns for New Haven in the final 87 seconds of the opening quarter as Nyshere Woodson walked in from seven yards out to end the period.

Lupoli finished the night connecting on 16-of-29 pass attempts which all led to his 233 total yards. Among those were a pair of 30+ passes, both of which found the hands of Williams. In addition to his 31-yard touchdown reception, Lupoli and Williams also connected on a 42-yard gain. Overall, Williams was one of six targets that the junior quarterback relied on with senior AJ Greene (Middle Island, N.Y./Newfield) hauling in the most passes, six which led to a 78-yard haul. Williams finished the night with 92 yards on four catches.

Defensively, New Haven was led by junior transfer Allah Sessions (Elmira, N.Y./Elmira) who closed out the night with seven total tackles. Following just behind him was Dennis James (Hillside, N.J./St. Peter's Prep) and Zach Cofrancesco (East Haven, Conn./Notre Dame) who each collected six tackles. Senior Markel Johnson (Jersey City, N.J./Lincoln) was a disruption all night for the Saint Anselm offense as he finished the game with four total tackles, however 2.5 of those went for loss, including 1.5 that were sacks.

The Chargers defense also opened up the game strong when junior Shawn Tafe (Bronx, N.Y./Fort Hamilton) ended the Hawks opening drive of the evening with his team-leading fourth interception of the season. In addition to that, Cofrancesco picked up a turnover on the night when he forced a fumble for the second straight game with teammate Martin Worgan (Flourtown, Pa./Springfield Township) pouncing on the loose ball for the recovery.

New Haven will return to action in one week when it travels just 2.5 miles from its West Haven campus to take on crosstown rival Southern Connecticut State University in the annual Elm City battle. The Chargers look to maintain possession of the Elm City trophy which has resided in West Haven for the last nine matchups. Kick off from Jess Dowd Field in New Haven is scheduled for 2:30 p.m.
