Men’s Soccer Plays to 1-1 Draw at Stonehill

EASTON, Mass. – A goal early in the second half from freshman David Peteri (Rotterdam, Netherlands/Erasmiaans Gymnasium) helped the New Haven men's soccer team play to a 1-1 draw at Stonehill on Saturday. The goal was Peteri's second in three games, and was assisted by sophomore JP Viruet (Seymour, Conn./Seymour).

Senior Stefano Lorusso (Auckland, New Zealand/Sacred Heart College) made two saves in goal for New Haven, whose defense held the Skyhawks (3-5-1, 1-2-1 NE10) to just three shots on goal in the match. New Haven (2-5-1, 0-4-1 NE10) totaled 19 shots, including eight on goal. Each team drew five corner kicks.

After the Chargers got a shot on goal in the third minute, Stonehill struck on its first scoring chance of the match in the 12th minute on a goal from Ian Pereira to take a 1-0 lead.

Trailing 1-0 to start the second half, Peteri leveled the score at 1-1 in the 49th minute of a Viruet assist. New Haven put two additional attempts on goal in the second half, but was unable to find the back of the net before the end of regulation.

Lorusso was forced to make a pair of saves within the first 17 minutes of the second half before New Haven held the Skyhawks to zero shots on goal over the final 48 minutes of play.

After a scoreless first overtime period, the Chargers nearly scored a golden goal in the 107th minute, but Jon Calvo's (Vitoria, Spain/Olabide Ikastola) shot towards the bottom right corner was blocked away by a defender, marking the last scoring chance for either side.

Next up, the Chargers will return home on Wednesday afternoon at 4 p.m. to host crosstown rival Southern Connecticut State in a Northeast-10 Conference showdown.
