WEST HAVEN, Conn. – New Haven field hockey will take on Assumption for the second time this season on Wednesday afternoon at 1 p.m. Now No. 8 in the nation, Assumption enters the matchup on a six-game winning streak
INSIDE THE SERIES
Including this season's 2-0 win in Worcester, the Hounds have won all four matchups over the last three seasons against the Chargers.
SCOUTING THE CHARGERS (4-7, 4-3 NE10)
The Chargers will be playing a ranked opponent for the fourth time this season, most recently coming in their last game against No. 2 West Chester, who moved up to No. 1 in the nation in this week's NFHCA rankings. New Haven also faced then-No. 9 Adelphi and then-No. 4 Saint Anselm. New Haven pulled out a 1-0 victory last Wednesday at Southern Connecticut State behind the first career goal for freshman
Anna Racine (Whiteford, Md./North Hartford). The Chargers have not lost a game this year in which they have scored, winning four games in NE10 play, and suffering seven shutout losses thus far in 2019.
In their third season as a varsity program, the Chargers have already taken significant strides forward. After jumping out to their best start in NE10 play in program history, the Chargers have also set a new program record for goals in a game with their 4-2 win over Molloy on Sept. 18. The team's most recent win over Southern Connecticut was also the first shutout win in program history.
Junior goaltender
Natalie Shaker (Newtown, Conn./Newtown) tied a career-high with 22 saves on Sept. 25 at No. 9 Adelphi, ranking her second in the NE10 this season in saves with 93.
Sophomore
Julia Battino (Haddonfield, N.J./Haddonfield Memorial) scored her third goal of the season on Sept. 21 at American International, moving into the team lead in that category. Sophomore
Alexis Rider (Delran, N.J./Delran) registered a two-goal night against Molloy. Sophomore
Taylor Geaglone (Enfield, Conn./Enfield) boasts a team-leading two assists, while freshman
Zharria John (Piscataway, N.J./Piscataway) has the team's other assist.
SCOUTING THE GREYHOUNDS (10-1, 6-1 NE10)
After opening up the season with three straight wins, Assumption fell 1-0 in double overtime at Stonehill on Sept. 17 and has won all seven games since. The Hounds have scored at least three goals in each game during their current seven game streak, including at least four goals in six of their last seven.
Scoring at a clip of 4.1 goals per game, Assumption is surrendering just 0.71 goal per contest. They are the only team in the conference averaging over 3.5 goals per game, and are one of only two teams allowing fewer than one goal.
Deirdre Burchill and Courtney Sickel are tied for fourth in the NE10 with seven goals apiece. Burchill's five assists rank her second in the conference and Shannon Quinlan adds four assists. Jennifer Beardsley and Summer Walsh have six goals each. In goal sophomore Kylie Gargiulo has posted five shutouts to go with a 0.61 GAA and .865 save pct.
ON DECK
Next up, New Haven will head north to face Saint Michael's on Saturday at noon.
