WEST HAVEN, Conn. – A balanced attack across the board for the New Haven women's volleyball team lead to its second straight three-set sweep, defeating fellow Nutmeg State rival Bridgeport 25-20, 25-19, 25-22. Leading the Blue and Gold on the night was senior outside hitter
Mallory Nowicki (Grand Rapids, Mich./Northview) who was the only Charger to finish in double figures with 10 kills.
Nowicki's 10 kills tied all players in the match for the highest of the night as she closed out the contest hitting .296 with just two errors in 27 total attempts. Following her in leading the Chargers was freshman
Emily Barry (Freeport, N.Y./Sacred Heart Academy) who racked up nine kills while sophomore
Ruby Fera (Seattle, Wash./Ballard) chipped in eight and a pair of hitters closed out the night with seven kills; juniors
Kali Greathead (Temecula, Calif./Temecula Valley) and
Camille Garden (Atlanta, Ga./Landmark Christian).
As a team, New Haven hit .258 for the match, a full point better than the Purple Knights have held opponents to this season which stood at .157 entering the evening. Individually, Garden led the Chargers with a .500 hitting average with her seven kills coming on 12 attempts with just a single error. Combined, the Chargers finished the night with 45 kills, with their best hitting coming in the second set where they smacked 20 kills in 51 attempts with a single error.
Leading New Haven in a 6-2 setter rotation was junior
Angela Chan (Jacksonville, Fla./Bishop Kenny) who finished with 22 assists while freshman
Sammie Paguia (Ashburn, Va./Stone Bridge) added 14 helpers. Freshman libero
Julia Guarniere (Milford, N.H./Milford) also chipped in six assists while she finished among the defensive leaders with 15 digs. Chan would close out the night with a team-high 17 digs to complete her eighth double double of the season.
The Chargers also combined for five total blocks and seven service aces. On the defensive side, Garden led the way with three blocks while three different players all contributed a pair of points on aces; Fera, Chan and Paguia.
New Haven will return to action on Saturday with a pair of matches as part of a tri-match with Le Moyne and Mercy. The day will begin with an 11:00 a.m. first serve in an NE10 Conference match-up against the Dolphins, while the evening will end with the final non-conference meeting of the year against Mercy (5:00 p.m.).
