WEST HAVEN, Conn. – The New Haven field hockey season came to a close on Friday evening, one win shy of qualifying for the Northeast-10 Conference Tournament as the Chargers fell to Bentley 3-0 in their season finale. Bentley (9-9, 7-7 NE10) used a pair of fourth quarter goals to pull away from the Chargers (5-13, 5-9 NE10), who finish their third varsity season with a school record five wins.
The event was the program's Pride Game in support of pride awareness and ensuring the safety and inclusion for all.
Bentley outshot the Chargers 11-7 in the contest, while New Haven drew five penalty corners to the Falcons' two.
After registering the only shot of the first quarter, Bentley cracked the scoreboard with a goal early in the second quarter. In the 19th minute, Tess Anderson dribbled around a Charger defender, put a shot on goal that was saved, then collected her own rebound and buried it in the bottom right corner to give Bentley a 1-0 lead.
Still trailing by one late in the third quarter, the Chargers cranked up the offensive pressure and drew three penalty corners in the final three minutes of the frame, resulting in four shots, including one that was saved off the stick of
Taylor Geaglone (Enfield, Conn./Enfield), one that was blocked and one shot that was tipped just wide of the left post by
Alexis Rider (Delran, N.J./Delran).
Bentley upped the lead to 2-0 in the 50th minute when Rachel Crowley took a long centering pass in the middle of the circle, spun and sent a shot into the net for a big insurance goal. Sam Pavano added another backbreaking tally just over four minutes later off a rebound in front to up the Falcon lead once more to 3-0.
The Chargers earned another penalty corner opportunity with just under two minutes remaining, but were unable to convert.
As part of their program-best five victories this season, the Chargers set many new milestones including winning back-to-back games for the first time, set a program record with four goals in a game, and earned their first shutout with a 1-0 win over Southern Conn. State.
