Football Downs Stonehill 27-17 to Close out 2019 Campaign with Home Victory

WEST HAVEN, Conn. – The Connecticut National Guard Player of the Game, sophomore running back, Shamar Logan (Brooklyn, N.Y./High School for Youth & Community Development) put up his fifth 100+ game of the season to lead the New Haven football team to a 27-17 decision over the visiting Stonehill Skyhawks to cap off the 2019 campaign with a win on its home turf. New Haven closes out the season with a 7-3 overall record and a 6-2 mark in the Northeast-10, tied for the best record in the league with Bentley who earns the NE10 Championship by virtue of a tiebreaker.

Logan capped off his season with a 122 yard performance, with that yardage coming on 15 carries for an average of 8.1 yards per attempt. His two touchdowns included the longest rushing score of the season, a 75-yard haul that completed a one-play scoring drive to open the third quarter, a play that received Army ROTC Play of the Game accolades. Logan would also score the final touchdown of the day for the Blue and Gold, a two-yard dash that closed out a 14-play, 90-yard drive that provided the final margin of the afternoon.

Joining Logan in leading the Chargers on the day was junior quarterback Christian Lupoli (Branford, Conn./Notre Dame) and graduate wide receiver Ju'an Williams (Springfield, Mass./Springfield Central). Lupoli finished out his season with 240 passing yards, completing 15-of-20 attempts including one touchdown, which went to Williams from 13 yards out late in the second quarter to provide a 13-10 margin at the intermission for New Haven. That 13-yard catch was one of Williams team-high seven receptions that all accounted for 129 yards, including two of which that went for 30+ yards. One of those catches for distance was a 39-yard reception in the second quarter that came on a 3rd-and-26 for New Haven, keeping alive a drive the eventually ended with his touchdown catch.

Williams also racked up 73 returns yards on three attempts with his longest of the afternoon going for 29 yards. Additionally, his 129 yards also mean he closes out his two-year career at New Haven with 1,962 yards, the ninth most by an individual player in the history of the program.

In addition to Logan's 122 yards on the ground, senior Chris Liggio (Mount Laurel, N.J./Holy Cross) and Lupoli added 46 and 39 yards, respectively, as the Chargers cclosed out the afternoon with 206 rushing yards, compared to 164 for the Skyhawks. New Haven also outgained their opponent in the air with Lupoli's 240 yards surpassing Stonehill's Anton Stoneking total of 228 yards while he also threw a trio of interceptions.

Defensively, junior Shawn Tafe (Bronx, N.Y./Fort Hamilton) and seniors Christian Sullivan (Staten Island, N.Y./Tottenville) and Austin Cascio (Hollister, Calif./San Benito) each picked off one of Stoneking passes with the interception by Tafe his fifth of the season which put him in a tie for the ninth most in a single season at New Haven. It also gave him seven for his career as he will enter his senior season needing two more to join the all-time career interception leaders.

Overall, graduate transfer Zach Cofrancesco (East Haven, Conn./Notre Dame) and junior transfer Allah Sessions (Elmira, N.Y./Elmira) led New Haven's defense with eight tackles apiece. Just behind them was junior Martin Worgan (Flourtown, Pa./Springfield Township) with seven tackles and sophomore Ryan Hodgins (Flanders, N.J./Mount Olive) with six stops. Also among the defensive highlights was one of three total tackles for loss by the Chargers, this one in particular coming from Markel Johnson (Jersey City, N.J./Lincoln) as he extended his team lead in that category to 12.0 which puts him in a two-way tie with Dwayne Brown (2000) for the ninth most in a single season, while he closes out his career with 28.0 TFL, placing him in a tie with Raheen Stanley (2009-12) for seventh most in program history.
