THE LEAD
The New Haven men's basketball team kicks off its 26-game 2019-20 schedule with a road match-up at Concordia on Monday with tipoff slated for 5:00 p.m. at the Meyer Athletic Center. The season opener at Concordia is the first game in a season-opening stretch that includes four road games over the first five games of the season.
SERIES HISTORY VS CONCORDIA
In a series dating back to the 1961-62 campaign, the Chargers own a 26-3 record in the 29 meetings prior to this year. New Haven will look for its fourth-straight win against the Clippers with this the return game following a 74-70 New Haven victory last season at Charger Gym. Prior to last year's match-up, the Chargers and Clippers hadn't met since a home-and-away series spanning the 2012-13 and 2013-14 campaigns.
SCOUTING THE CHARGERS
New Haven makes its debut on the hardwood Monday night, coming off a 21-10 campaign last season that included an appearance in the Ne10 Championship game and the NCAA East Region Championship semifinals. New Haven returns four of its top-five scorers from a year ago, including NE10 All-Conference First Team honoree
Elijah Bailey (Freeport, N.Y./The Hotchkiss School) who led the Chargers with a 19.2 ppg scoring average, leading the Chargers to a school record 267 three pointers, sinking 68 of his own. Bailey also added 118 rebounds, 45 assists and 24 steals to his credit. Joining him among the leading returners are three additional starters, redshirt-junior
Derrick Rowland (Cohoes, N.Y./Green Tech), senior
Kessly Felizor (Hightstown, N.J./Hightstown) and sophomore
Quashawn Lane (Trenton, N.J./Trenton Catholic Academy). Rowland closed out last season averaging 12.7 points per game while leading the team with 104 assists and 35 steals. Felizor finished just behind him an average of 10.3 ppg, while he led the rebounding efforts pulling down 7.0 rebounds per outing. Lane closes out the leading returners with his 8.9 ppg scoring average while second on the team with 92 assists.
SCOUTING THE CLIPPERS
Concordia has four games under its belt ahead of tonight's matchup against New Haven, entering with an 0-4 record with all four of those losses against Northeast-10 opponents. Through those four games, the Clippers are being outscored by more than 30 points per game, allowing their opponents to average 90.8 points. For the season, senior guard Brandon Field currently leads Concordia with an average of 13.9 points per game while sophomore forward Decon Sims enters at 10.8 ppg and rounds out the Clippers averaging in double figures.
UP NEXT
New Haven will return home to Charger Gymnasium for its inaugural appearance in 2019-20 as it tips off the Northeast-10 schedule on Saturday, November 23 against Le Moyne. The NE10 Southwest Division match-up is the only appearance the Chargers will make on their home court in the month of November. Opening tipoff is scheduled for 3:30 p.m., but will follow the conclusion of the women's game which is scheduled for a 1:30 p.m. start.
