Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Chargers Surge to 3-0 Start with Balanced 64-47 Win over Bloomfield

WEST HAVEN, Conn. – The New Haven women's basketball team is off to its first 3-0 start in five years following a strong 64-47 win over Bloomfield on Wednesday. The Chargers used a balanced attack offensively, with five players reaching double-digits in scoring, led by sophomore Camryn DeBose (Wellington, Fla./Wellington Community) and freshman Aurora Deshaies (Syracuse, N.Y./Bishop Ludden) who scored 12 point each. Redshirt sophomore Luzdali Ocasio (Davenport, Fla./New Hampton) and junior Jasmine White (Huntington, N.Y./St. Anthony's) each netted new career-highs with 10 points apiece and senior Micah Wormack (Cumberland, Md./Allegany) also chipped in 10 along with a team-high eight rebounds.
Wednesday marked the first time the Chargers had five players reach double figures in scoring since December 30, 2018 against Nyack.
Ten different players combined for a season-high 19 assists on 26 made field goals, while the team shot a season-best 46.4 percent (26-for-56) from the floor and 37.5 percent (6-for-16) from downtown. Once again, the Chargers defense proved to be a difference maker by forcing 28 turnovers and collecting 14 steals, limiting the Bears to a 31.3 percent night shooting and just 3-for-19 from three-point range.

QUOTES FROM THE COACH: Debbie Buff
"I thought we shot the ball much better tonight. Our defense had to be solid once again to hold a team to just 47 points, but we have to come out of the gate with more energy than we did tonight, especially with a good Le Moyne team coming to town on Saturday."

FIRST QUARTER
  • After falling behind 5-0 out of the gate, the Chargers shot 57.1 percent in the first quarter, including a pair of threes from DeBose and Ocasio that helped tie the game 8-8 at the 6:56 mark.
  • After the teams exchanged baskets, New Haven turned a two-point deficit into a six-point lead by rolling off an 8-0 run to end the quarter, including six points from Wormack to hold an 18-12 lead after one.

SECOND QUARTER
  • Bloomfield got within five points on three separate occasions in the second quarter, but the Chargers answered each time, including Ocasio's second triple of the first half, and consecutive baskets from White and Wormack with just under three minutes remaining put New Haven up by nine.
  • A pair of DeBose free throws with 20 seconds left gave the Chargers a 34-25 lead going into halftime.
The Chargers finished the first half shooting an even 50 percent (14-for-28) from the floor and 40 percent (4-for-10) from the arc.

THIRD QUARTER
  • Deshaies pushed the lead to double digits for the first time at 40-29 with a layup off an Ocasio assist at the 5:59 mark.
  • The Chargers rattled off six straight points late in the frame, coming on four free throws from DeBose and a layup from Wormack, pushing the lead to 14 points at 48-34 with 1:33 remaining.

FOURTH QUARTER
  • Bloomfield scored two quick points to open the fourth before the Chargers put the game away with a big 14-1 run to jump out a game-high 23-point edge.
  • A pair of steals by Bionca Chambers (Bronx, N.Y./New Milford) helped set up two fast break baskets, including a three-pointer by Brie Pergola (Torrington, Conn./Torrington) and a layup from Deshaies. Pergola followed with another three-pointer to grow the lead to 56-39, prompting a Bloomfield timeout with 4:26 remaining.
  • The run continued after the break with six more Charger points on jumpers from Deshaies, White, and the first collegiate basket for Aliyah Wright (Albany, N.Y./Colonie Central) to get the lead to 62-39 with 2:01 on the clock.
  • New Haven finished the fourth by shooting 43.8 percent (7-for-16) and connected on two of their three attempts from downtown.
The Chargers will wrap up their four game homestand on Saturday afternoon at 1:30 when they welcome Le Moyne to open up Northeast-10 Conference play.
