WEST HAVEN, Conn. – A pair of first half goals from graduate student
Tiago Vintem (Lisbon, Portugal/E.S. Pedro Nunes) and junior
Sean Skeens (Auckland, New Zealand/Westlake Boys) help lift the New Haven men's soccer team to a 2-0 win over Bentley in Wednesday's season finale at Kathy Zolad Stadium. Vintem's goal was his second of the season and Skeens' insurance goal late in the half was his fourth of the year. Freshman
Jon Calvo (Vitoria, Spain/Olabide Ikastola) and junior
Frantz Innocent Jr. (East Hartford, Conn./Connecticut IB Academy) each tallied an assist in the victory. Senior
Stefano Lorusso (Auckland, New Zealand/Sacred Heart College) earned the win in his final collegiate match, making seven saves to pick up his third shutout of the season.
New Haven bookended the first half with their two goals, scoring early before adding a second goal in the closing moments. Calvo took a corner kick late in the fifth minute, serving it into the box where Vintem rose up and plunked the header top shelf in the middle of the goal for the early 1-0 New Haven lead.
Bentley nearly tied the score early in the 41st minute on a breakaway, but Lorusso came to the top of the eight-yard box to make two critical sliding saves in quick succession.
The Chargers answered right back on their ensuing possession in the 44th minute with Innocent Jr. threading a pass ahead on the left side of the box to Skeens, who skidded a left-footed shot on the ground past the keeper to stake the Chargers to a 2-0 lead going into halftime.
Bentley came out of the locker room with added offensive pressure, forcing Lorusso to make four saves over the final 45 minutes, and hit four posts over the first 19 minutes of the period.
The Chargers looked to score again in the 54th minute, but a shot from freshman
David Peteri (Rotterdam, Netherlands/Erasmiaans Gymnasium) flew just wide of the left post after taking a pass across. Junior
Alessandro Pappalardo (Rome, Italy/Stamford) nearly put the game away with a shot in the 85th minute after taking a centering feed from Skeens, but his attempt was just tipped over the bar by the Bentley keeper.
Bentley outshot the Chargers 21-15 (7-5 on goal) while each team drew five corner kicks. The Chargers finish the 2019 season at 5-10-1 overall and 3-8-1 in Northeast-10 play. Bentley will head to the NE10 Tournament at 8-8 (6-6 NE10).
