Wormack Hits Late Jumper; Four Reach Double-Figures to Lift Chargers to Gritty 66-64 Win at Chestnut Hill

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – A big jumper off an inbounds pass from Micah Wormack (Cumberland, Md./Allegany) with 1.4 seconds left lifted the New Haven women's basketball team to a gritty 66-64 non-conference win at Chestnut Hill on Wednesday night. New Haven had four players score at least 15 points, led by sophomore Camryn DeBose (Wellington, Fla./Wellington Community) with 18 points, who tied her career-high with five three-pointers. Sophomore Brie Pergola (Torrington, Conn./Torrington) had four triples of her own to score 15 points, while Wormack and freshman Aurora Deshaies (Syracuse, N.Y./Bishop Ludden) each picked up double-doubles with 15 points and 10 rebounds apiece.

Sophomore Luzdali Ocasio (Davenport, Fla./New Hampton) dished out a career-high 10 assists, the first New Haven player to register 10 helpers in a game since Helin Marte had 10 against Adelphi in December 2009. As a team, the Chargers tallied 22 assists on 27 made field goals, marking the first time New Haven had at least 20 assists in a game since February 2014.

In a game featuring several extended runs by both teams, and four lead changes in the fourth quarter, New Haven shot 41.5 percent from the floor and drilled a season-high nine three-pointers. The Chargers also held a 40-32 edge in rebounds and now hold an 8-1 record on the season.

QUOTES FROM THE COACH: Debbie Buff
  • "It says a lot about our team how they stuck together and refused to lose. They had to gut it out against a good Chestnut Hill team. This was big for us. We're very proud of how they responded with back-to-back road wins in consecutive days."
  • "Brie (Pergola) and Cam (DeBose) each hit some huge shots. On the play at the end, Micah was actually double-covered, so she had to go up and get it while being face-guarded. Really good pass by (Ocasio), catch and execution."
FIRST QUARTER
  • The Chargers rained home a trio of threes in the early going, the first two from DeBose and the third from Pergola to give New Haven its first lead, 9-7 at the 5:23 mark. Wormack followed with a jumper to extend New Haven's run to 10-0 and give the team a 13-7 lead at 4:28, prompting a CHC timeout.
  • The run extended to a 16-3 streak overall as New Haven built up a 19-10 lead thanks to six straight points from Deshaies.
  • CHC closed the quarter on a 6-0 run to cut the Charger edge to 19-16 after one.
SECOND QUARTER
  • New Haven countered with another big run to start the second quarter, rattling off a 10-2 burst to take a 29-18 lead.
  • After eight straight from the Griffins shrunk the lead down to three, Pergola hit New Haven's fifth three of the opening half to grow the lead to 32-26.
  • Chestnut Hill got within 32-30 at the 4:17 mark before neither team scored for 3:38, which ended when Wormack hit a free throw with 19 seconds remaining to give New Haven a 33-30 lead at halftime.
THIRD QUARTER
  • DeBose used a pair of threes to help the Chargers build a 45-37 lead just past the midway point of the third quarter, only to see Chestnut Hill score eight of the next 10 points to get within one, 47-46 with 2:06 to go.
  • Wormack kept the Chargers in front with a short jumper at 1:17, but the Griffins knocked down a three-pointer with three seconds left to tie the game at 49.
FOURTH QUARTER
  • Chestnut Hill scored the first four points to extend their run to 16-4 and take a 53-49 lead.
  • After falling behind by as many as four once again, Pergola help retie the score at 57 with back-to-back threes at the 6:13 mark. The second triple sparked another 7-0 run for New Haven as Wormack added a pair of layups over the next two minutes to build a 61-57 lead.
  • After the Griffins scored the next five points to retake the lead 63-62, Pergola stepped up big for New Haven by sinking a jumper from the left elbow for a 63-62 lead with 41 seconds left.
  • DeBose hit one of two free throws with 11 seconds left for the 64-62 lead, but the Griffins drew a foul on a three-point attempt with three seconds left, and hit two of their free throw attempts to tie the game at 64.
  • After a Charger timeout, Ocasio inbounded the ball from in front of the New Haven bench to Wormack who quickly put up a shot from just outside the paint that went in with 1.4 seconds left. The ensuing inbounds pass from the Griffins was knocked away as the Chargers locked down their fourth straight win.
New Haven will now have a seven-day break for final exams before returning to the court for the final time in 2019 at Dominican next Thursday, Dec. 19.
