ROCKVILLE CENTRE, N.Y. – Senior right side
Mallory Nowicki (Grand Rapids, Mich./Northview) clammed a team-high 14 kills to lead the Chargers as the New Haven volleyball team dropped a four-set decision to Saint Anselm in the opening round of the NCAA Division II East Region Championship. Nowicki and the Chargers close out the 2019 campaign with a 16-11 overall record.
Nowicki was one of three players to finish in double figures as junior middle blocker
Camille Garden (Atlanta, Ga./Landmark Christian) and freshman outside hitter
Emily Barry (Freeport, N.Y./Sacred Heart Academy) each dropped in a dozen kills. Among the three leading hitters, Nowicki again led the way with a .333 attack percentage as her 14 kills came on 39 attempts with a single error. Rounding out the leading hitters was junior
Kali Greathead (Temecula, Calif./Temecula Valley) and sophomore
Ruby Fera (Seattle, Wash./Ballard) who finished with nine and seven kills, respectively.
As a team, New Haven collected 57 total kills, racking up 56 assists on those kills. Overall, the Blue and Gold finished with a .227 attack percentage with the Chargers setting duo of junior
Angela Chan (Jacksonville, Fla./Bishop Kenny) and freshman
Sammie Paguia (Ashburn, Va./Stone Bridge) marshalling the offense attack. Among the pair, Paguia led the Chargers with 27 assists while Chan added 25.
Defensively, New Haven was led by its freshman libero
Julia Guarniere (Milford, N.H./Milford) who returned 20 of the Hawks attack attempts. Overall, Guarniere was one of four players to register double figures defensively with Chan among the group as she completed a double double adding 11 digs. Rounding out the defensive leaders was Fera with 19 digs and Greathead with 18. The Chargers also combined for seven total blocks with Garden leading the way with five of the seven.
