WEST HAVEN, Conn. – The New Haven men's basketball team (2-5, 1-3 NE10) outscored Saint Rose (3-6, 0-4 NE10) 30-11 over the final 10-plus minutes to erase a second half deficit and secure the first Northeast-10 Conference win of the season 68-57 over the Golden Knights.
Leading the Chargers on the night was senior
Elijah Bailey (Freeport, N.Y./The Hotchkiss School) who net 20+ points for the third straight game dropping in 28 against the Southwest Division foe. Overall, Bailey was one of three players in double figures, joined by senior
Kessly Felizor (Hightstown, N.J./Hightstown) and redshirt junior
Derrick Rowland (Cohoes, N.Y./Green Tech) who added 16 and 14 points, respectively. Felizor also hauled in a team-high 11 rebounds for his second-straight double double.
Among the three leadings corers, Felizor and Rowland led the shooting efforts, each connecting on 6-of-10 from the field. Bailey converted 9-of-16 field goal attempts, including a team-high four three pointers, while also going 6-of-7 from the free throw line.
As a team, New Haven converted 25-of-48 shot attempts (52.1 percent) with a season-low six of those buckets from beyond the arc. The also added 12 points at the free throw line, which came on 17 attempts. Overall, all seven Chargers who saw action against the Golden Knights scored at least one point.
In addition to his 14 points, Rowland collected seven assists, which ties his career-best, for the second straight game and the fifth time over his three seasons on the hardwood. As a team, the Chargers also combined for six steals, forcing the Golden Knights into 19 turnovers which the Blue and Gold turned into 22 points, compared to just eight from Saint Rose.
New Haven would net the first points of the night on a three pointer form Bailey and maintained a one-possession game for the first five-plus minutes before the Golden Knights rattled off six unanswered points to break a 9-9 tie and take a 15-9 lead. The Chargers answered by scoring the next five points on a three pointer from Davontray Thomas and a layup from Rowland.
Once again, for the remainder of the opening half, neither team would lead by more than a single possession until the final minutes before the intermission when the Golden Knights scored the last four points heading into the break with a 32-28 lead.
Saint Rose maintained that late first half momentum, opening up the second half with the first four points to gain a 36-28 lead before a pair of free throws from Bailey began an 8-0 rally for the Blue and Gold. All eight points in that run came from Bailey and Felizor who split the action down the middle.
The Golden Knights weren't going to give in to the Chargers pressure as they answered New Haven's rally with one of their own, scoring 10 unanswered points to take a 46-36 lead with 11:03 to play. The half of runs continued, this time as the Chargers answered by scoring seven straight to pull within three, 46-43.
Saint Rose again opened up an eight point advantage which came with just under eight minutes remaining. From this point, New Haven would close out the game scoring 25 of the final 31 points, including the last 11 points after Bailey tied the score at 57 on a three pointer with 3:43 to play. He would strike again on back-to-back shots from beyond the arc, the final one inside of a minute which provided an eight point cushion, 65-57.
New Haven will continue NE10 Southwest Division play when they return to the hardwood on Tuesday night on the road in Springfield when they face off against the American International Yellow Jackets. Opening tip form Butova Gymnasium is slated for 7:30 p.m. following the women's game.
