PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. – The New Haven men's basketball team shot a season-high 62.2 percent from the field for a big 80-69 road win on Wednesday night at Pace. The performance marks the second time this season New Haven has shot over 60 percent in a game, and their 50.0 percent clip (11-of-22) from beyond the arc marks the fourth time this year they have eclipsed 50 percent from downtown.
Junior Elijah Bailey (Freeport, N.Y./The Hotchkiss School) tallied a game-high 23 points and three steals on 8-of-12 shooting. Junior Roy Kane, Jr. (Norwalk, Conn./Norwalk) tied his career-high with 22 points and led the team with nine rebounds on 9-of-14 shooting. Derrick Rowland (Cohoes, N.Y./Green Tech) scored 16 points on 6-of-8 from the field and tied his career-high with seven assists. Junior Kessly Felizor (Hightstown, N.J./Hightstown) also reached double figures with 11 points while going 8-for-8 from the free throw line.
New Haven (16-7, 11-6 NE10) also held a 24-20 edge on the glass. Pace (15-9, 9-7 NE10) finished the game at 52 percent overall and 5-for-19 from three-point range.
FIRST HALF
· The Chargers started the game 4-for-4 from the field, building a 9-5 lead over the opening 2:13 on three-pointers from Rowland and Kane, Jr. (2). Kane, Jr. then added a short jumper to make it 11-7 on the next possession.
· Rowland extended the lead to 14-10 with another triple at 13:51, as the Chargers started the game 5-for-7.
· Bailey hit the team's fifth three-pointer in seven attempts to extend the lead to 19-14 at 12:07.
· Pace use a 7-2 run to get within 23-21 when Najee Larcher (Brooklyn, N.Y./Xaverian) took a pass from Quashawn Lane (Trenton, N.J. /Trenton Catholic Academy), found himself all alone in the lane and finished with a two-handed slam to get the lead back to four at 8:40.
· New Haven's start extended to 14-of-18 after Rowland connected on back-to-back threes from the left wing to make it 33-25 at the 6:03 mark. Felizor added his first bucket of the game with a three of his own to extend the lead to 36-25, forcing a Pace timeout with 5:20 left until halftime.
· Kane's baseline floater grew the lead to 12 for the first time at 40-28, but Pace responded with a 10-0 run to get within two in the final minute of the half. Bailey ended the run with a free throw with 33.2 seconds left to make it 41-38, which carried into halftime.
New Haven finished the first half shooting 68.2 percent after a 15-for-20 start, including 8-of-12 from three-point range. Pace connected at a 51.7 percent clip in the opening 20 minutes. Each team turned the ball over four times, with Pace holding a 10-3 edge off those miscues.
SECOND HALF
· New Haven held a 43-41 lead early in the second, and quickly got it out to double digits with a 9-0 run over a 2:12 span, forcing a Pace timeout at the 17:14 mark.
· Bailey took over control of the game, going on a torrid streak of 7-for-8 shooting, scoring seven points as part of the 9-0 run. Following another Pace turnover, Bailey made the Setters pay with a three-pointer, and Kane, Jr. followed with a second chance layup off a missed jumper to make it 52-41 Chargers.
· Bailey scored seven straight for New Haven, and Felizor connected on two from the charity stripe to once again grow the lead to 11, 63-52.
· Bailey stayed with his fourth triple of the game, hitting from the left corner to get the lead to 14, 66-52 with 11:26 to play.
· Felizor and Bailey ended a 5-0 Setters run with two free throws apiece to grow the lead back to 13, 70-57.
· Pace slowly chipped away with a 10-2 run to get within 72-67 with under five minutes remaining. Kane, Jr. and Larcher added back-to-back hoops, and following a steal, Rowland spun his way to the basket for two with the left hand to quickly grow the Charger lead back to 11 with just under three minutes left.
· New Haven held Pace scoreless over the final 2:33, and limited the Setters to just one three-pointer in their final eight attempts.
The Chargers will return home on Saturday afternoon at 3:30 p.m. for a NE10 divisional matchup with Saint Rose on Senior Day. The Chargers will honor their senior class of 2018 with a pregame ceremony.
