Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Wormack’s Career Night not Enough as Late Pace Run Sinks Chargers

PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. – Junior Micah Wormack (Cumberland, Md./Allegany) put up a strong performance, featuring career-highs of 30 points and 18 rebounds, but Pace used a big fourth quarter to surge past the New Haven women's basketball team 68-61 on Wednesday. Sophomore Brie Pergola (Torrington, Conn./Torrington) scored a season-high 17 points, tied her career-high with four three-pointers and added four assists in the losing effort. Wormack went 14-for-22 from the field to lead the Chargers, freshman Camryn DeBose (Wellington, Fla./Wellington Community) tied her career-high with five steals, and senior Alexandria Kerr (Montclair, N.J./Montclair) led the Chargers with five assists.

Pace outshot New Haven 47.1 percent to 42.6 percent in the game. Pace forced 16 New Haven turnovers, converting that into a 23-10 advantage in points off turnovers. With the Chargers leading by three entering the fourth quarter, Pace outscored New Haven 22-12 over the final 10 minutes, holding New Haven to just 5-of-18 shooting down the stretch.

FIRST QUARTER

·       The Chargers wasted no time jumping on the Setters, running out to a quick 6-0 lead over the first 2:18 of the game. DeBose found Wormack in transition, Wormack added a layup in the lane and Kerr used a long pass ahead of the pack to DeBose for a quick layup, forcing a Pace timeout.

·       The Setters scored eight of the next 10 points, with six of those points coming off three New Haven turnovers to tie the game 8-8. Pace then took its first lead, 11-10, off a three-pointer at 4:30. Pace then tallied pull-up jumper to take a 13-10 lead, forcing a New Haven timeout with 3:52 to go.

·       Wormack ended the 13-4 run with a turnaround jumper in the lane off an assist from Talley.

·       After five unanswered from Pace, Pergola took a pass from Katia Oge (New City, N.Y./Immaculate Heart Academy) at the top of the key and drained a three-pointer to get within 18-15 with 39 seconds remaining.

·       Nine of the Setters 18 first quarter points came off New Haven turnovers. Wormack scored eight points on 4-of-5 from the field.

SECOND QUARTER

·       Pergola knocked down her second triple of the ballgame to get within 23-18 after five straight from the Setters to open the frame.

·       Womack and Pergola added consecutive nifty putbacks to get New Haven within 25-22. Kim Talley (Quakertown, Pa./Lansdale Catholic) then found Wormack underneath who banked in a turnaround with the left had to make it 25-24. Wormack then took advantage of a Pace miscue and banked one in off the Pergola dime to give New Haven the lead back, 26-25 with 4:16 left until halftime.

·       Wormack extended the run to 10-0 with a layup before Pace scored the final five points of the half to take a 30-28 lead into the locker room, capped by a three-pointer in the closing seconds after the Pace defense forced a shot clock violation.

THIRD QUARTER

·       Wormack quickly tied the game in the opening seconds of the third with a basket underneath. She then promptly grabbed a steal on the defensive end and gave the Chargers a two-point lead off a second chance layup at 9:01.

·       Kerr scored five answered for the Chargers before Pace sank a long trey and called timeout with the score 37-34 New Haven at 6:39.

·       Wormack set a new career-high with her 23rd and 24th points after a tremendous effort on the offensive glass, collecting two offensive rebounds and drawing a foul, then hitting both free throws to give New Haven a 43-39 lead at the 3:21 mark.

·       Pergola tacked on her third triple of the night to extend the lead to 49-44, helping New Haven hold a 49-46 edge through three quarters.

·       New Haven shot a strong 57 percent from the field in the quarter.

FORUTH QUARTER

·       Pace scored five quick points to hold a two-point lead just under two minutes in, only to see Wormack re-knot the game with a long jumper from the top of the key.

·       The Setters retook the lead at 56-54 on a three-pointer with 5:57 to go, sparking a 10-0 run that culminated with a hoop and free throw by Lauren Schetter with 1:24 remaining, and the Setters up 63-54.

·       The Chargers had a prolonged cold streak, going 0-for-9 from the floor and a scoreless drought of just over 5:30. Wormack ended the drought by cracking the 30-point mark with a putback layup with 40.8 seconds remaining to make it 63-56.

·       Pergola hit her fourth three of the night from the right wing to get New Haven within 64-59 with 26 seconds left.

·       The Setters iced the game with four consecutive free throws. Pergola added a driving bucket in the closing seconds to cap the 68-61 final.

The Chargers will return home to host Saint Rose on Senior Day this Saturday afternoon at 1:30 p.m. The team will honor its four-member senior class of 2018 with a ceremony prior to tipoff. Thursday's game between New Haven and Chestnut Hill has been canceled.
