MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The University of New Haven softball team dropped both of its games on day two of the Snowbird Freeze Out at Grand Park in Myrtle Beach. In the opening game the Chargers came up short 2-1 against Millersville, before falling in the nightcap 9-2 against Kutztown.
Sophomore Melissa Bike (Stratford, Conn./Saint Joseph) led the offense on the day, going a combined 2-of-5 on the day and currently leads the Chargers in hits for the season with five. Senior outfielder Sierra Whitlock (Woodbridge, Va./Woodbridge) also finished with a pair of hits on the day, those coming on seven at bats. Both of her hits came in the second game against Kutztown University.
Game One: Millersville 2, New Haven 1
Millersville took the lead in the bottom of the second inning scoring two runs. The Chargers quickly responded in the top of the third inning, cutting the lead in half. Mya Case (Syracuse, N.Y/West Genessee) singled to left field to start the Chargers rally. Taylor Luzzi (Fishkill, N.Y./John Jay) followed, reaching on a fielder's choice. Jovanna Hillman (Seymour, Conn./Saint Joseph) would provide the RBI hit, knocking in Luzzi on a single to center field. Freshman, Ava Fitzmaurice (Greenville, N.Y./Greenville) would hold the Marauders scoreless the remainder of the game.
Overall, Fitzmaurice was strong in the circle for the Chargers, pitching all seven innings, facing 26 batters and recording three strikeouts. She kept Millersville scoreless over the final five innings.
Game Two: Kutztown 9, New Haven 2
The Chargers would again need to work from behind against the Golden Bears, taking a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning. New Haven began to chip away in their half of the frame with Whitlock leading off the Chargers lineup with a single. Bike advanced Whitlock to second with a sac fly, while she was able to score courtesy of an error.
After the Blue and Gold held Kutztown scoreless through the top of the third, the Golden Bears broke open the game in the fourth inning, plating six runs to take a 9-1 lead. New Haven added its final run in the fifth inning with Hailey Polisano (Howell, N.J./Howell) starting off the inning with a pinch hit single to left center. She would eventually score thanks to a misplayed ball in center field off of the bat of Luzzi.

The Chargers will close out its season-opening trip to South Carolina with a pair of games on Sunday, opening up against Slippery Rock at 10:00 a.m. before taking on Georgian Court at 12:00 p.m.
