WEST HAVEN, Conn. – The No. 17 New Haven women's lacrosse team used a 10-2 run to close the first half to run past Southern Connecticut State 22-6 on Wednesday in the team's home opener at Kathy Zolad Stadium. Senior Mackenzie Reh (Medford, N.Y./Patchogue Medford) totaled 10 points for the second time this season, tying her own career-high and the second-most points in a single game in program history. Reh was one of four Chargers to score at least four points in the win. Senior Samantha Galler (Marshfield, Mass./Marshfield) scored four goals, while juniors Julia Jette (Franklin, Mass./Franklin) and Caroline Maher (Mansfield, Mass./Mansfield) each tallied two goals and two assists. New Haven also received two goals apiece from Grace Loeffler (Boca Raton, Fla./Cardinal Gibbons) and Marina Skelly (Ronkonkoma, N.Y./Connequot), while junior Kendra Nolan (Oak Ridge, N.J./Jefferson Township) scored once and contributed 10 draw controls.

New Haven dominated 20-10 in draw controls, with their 22 goals coming off 34 shots on goal. Gianna Guerra (Stony Point, N.Y./North Rockland) made six saves in goal to secure her third win of the season, and Erica Rinsky (North Caldwell, N.J./West Essex) made her season debut with two saves in the second half.

The Chargers move to 3-1 (2-0 NE10) on the season after their third straight win.

The game stayed close through the first 12 minutes as Reh and Galler both scored to put the Chargers up 2-0 just over three minutes into the game. The Owls answered moments later, but Jette turned an Owl turnover into a goal just over one minute later to make it 3-1.

Southern once again clawed back within one following a free position attempt at 25:06, but Maher answered moments later with her first goal of the afternoon. After the Owls scored again to close within 4-3, New Haven ripped off nine unanswered goals to take a 13-3 lead and start the running clock. Maher found Loeffler in front of the net to make it 5-3, and Reh found Skelly right after the ensuing draw control to put New Haven up 6-3.

Reh then had a hand in two of the next three goals, finding Galler once again for a tally, then scoring one of her own to put the Chargers up 9-3 with 12:35 left in the first half. After Galler and Maher connected for New Haven's 10th goal, Jette put New Haven up by eight with her second goal of the game, which came after four straight saves by the Owls' goalie on one possession. Reh later capped the New Haven run with a free position snipe that got the Chargers lead to 10 for the first time with 6:25 remaining.

The Owls put in two of the final three goals of the half, with Reh's fourth score of the half helping New Haven hold a 14-5 lead at the break.

The Chargers defense pitched a shutout through nearly the first 29 minutes of the second half as New Haven ran off eight unanswered goals to help put the game away. Sophomore Emily Holland (Londonderry, N.H./Londonderry) scored her fifth goal of the season exactly one minute in, giving New Haven a double digit lead that it held for the remainder of the match.

Galler scored her fourth of the game off an assist from Reh at 19:16, helping New Haven reach the 18-goal threshold for the third straight match. Raven Linton (Lawrenceville, N.J./Notre Dame) followed with her first goal of the season just past the midway point of the half to make it 19-5. After the Chargers drew a yellow card on Southern, Reh scored her final two goals of the afternoon, both off free position shots, with one coming in a man-up situation to grow the New Haven edge to 22-5. Olivia Serpa (Succasunna, N.J./Roxbury) capped the New Haven scoring spree with her first goal of the year before Southern's Samantha Cozzolino scored her third of the game with 1:06 left.

The Chargers will head south for their next game this Saturday, March 16 against Bridgeport in Orlando, Fla. Game time is set for 10 a.m. at Disney's Wide World of Sports.
