BOX SCORE 4 ORLANDO, Fla. – The University of New Haven women's tennis team closed out its week-long Spring Break trip to the Sunshine State with a 5-2 victory over Pacific on Friday at the USTA National Campus. Leading the Blue and Gold in their final match of the trip was sophomores Stephanie Gonzalez (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico/Academia Maria Reina) and Lilia Rodriguez (Bayamon, Puerto Rico/Colegio Marista) who each picked up a singles and double victory against the Boxers.
Both of Gonzalez's victories came at the number one positions as she opened up double action partnering with freshman Nicole Mika (Staten Island, N.Y./Laurel Springs) for a 6-4 victory at first doubles. The pair defeated Pacific's Chantelle Baclay and Marissa Hayashi. Gonzalez then posted a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Baclay at first singles.
Rodriquez partnered with junior Angela Mercurio (Bay Shore, N.Y./Islip) to score a 6-2 victory at second doubles, while Rodriquez singles victory came at the No. 2 position where she held off Halie Chang 6-3, 6-1. Rounding out the Chargers scoring was Caitlyn Burridge (Center Moriches, N.Y./Center Moriches) and Shelby Clyne (Islip Terrace, N.Y./East Islip) who scored victories and fifth and sixth singles. Burridge defeated Pacific's Hayashi 4-6, 6-1, 1-0 (10-8), while Clyne's victory came against Megan Meatte 6-2, 6-4.
Overall, New Haven competed in four matches while in Florida, finishing with a 1-3 record. On the opening day of competition, the Chargers dropped 7-0 decisions to Denison in the morning and Oral Roberts later that evening, both at the USTA National Campus. After having a match against Hope College suspended due to inclement weather, the Chargers traveled to Tampa where they dropped a 7-0 decision to the Spartans.
After returning to the Northeast, the Chargers will begin a four-match homestand on Saturday, March 30 when they host the Connecticut College Camels at the New Haven Tennis Courts. The match is scheduled to start at 12:00 p.m.
