MILFORD, Conn. – The University of New Haven women's tennis team closed out its 2018-19 campaign in fashion, extending its single season record to 12 victories, sweeping the Simmons Sharks 7-0.
Overall, the Chargers wouldn't surrender a single victory on the day, opening up the contest sweeping the doubles matches, led by Nicole Mika (Staten Island, N.Y./Laurel Springs) and Stephanie Gonzalez (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico/Academia Maria Reina) who shutout their competition at number one doubles 6-0.
Shelby Clyne (Islip Terrace, N.Y./East Islip) and Angela Mercurio (Bay Shore, N.Y./Islip) would score a 7-5 victory at number two doubles while Caitlyn Burridge (Center Moriches, N.Y./Center Moriches) and Nicole Calabrese (Staten Island, N.Y./Tottenville) capped off the doubles sweep taking the number three position with a final score of 6-4 over Sarah Mariski and Megan McKeever.
Including singles play, four Chargers closed out their season with a pair of victories. Leading the way was Gonzales who had both of her wins come in the number one positions as she took down Nickie Nguyen in straight sets 6-1, 6-0 for the single victory.
Mika followed her at number two singles with a 6-0, 6-2 decision while Burridge and Mercurio joined in earning two victories on the day each winning at third and fourth singles, respectively. At number five singles, Lauryn Burridge (Center Moriches, N.Y./Center Moriches) surrendered just two games overall as she scored her first victory of the afternoon 6-1, 6-1 over Mariski.
Rounding out New Haven's singles victories was Ashley Varrone (Shelton, Conn./Shelton) who defeated Carrie St. Peter 7-5, 6-2 at number six singles.
