WEST HAVEN, Conn. – The University of New Haven field hockey team will head to Mercy to open up Northeast-10 Conference play on Wednesday afternoon. In search of their first win of 2019, New Haven will be hoping for a similar result to the last time they played at Mercy, where they picked up the first win in program history last season.
INSIDE THE SERIES
The Chargers hold a 1-1 record all-time against Mercy, dropping a 1-0 decision in 2017, before capturing the first win in program history in Dobbs Ferry with a 3-2 victory on Oct. 2, 2018. Current sophomore Taylor Gegalone scored what proved to be the game-winner with just under five minutes remaining in regulation.

SCOUTING THE CHARGERS (0-2, 0-0 NE10)
The Chargers have dropped a pair of 2-0 decisions in their first two games to open the 2019 season.
Geaglone and
Morgan McCarty (Uxbridge, Mass./Uxbridge) lead the team in shots through the first two games while junior goalkeeper
Natalie Shaker (Newtown, Conn./Newtown) has made 19 stops on 23 shots on goal thus far.
New Haven returns 15 players, including 12 sophomores to this year's squad that saw significant time as freshmen last season. The Chargers return three upperclassmen in junior forward
Nina Bazan (Ossining, N.Y./Ossining) and Shaker, plus senior defender
Ashley Higgins (North Hatfield, Mass./Smith Academy). New Haven also welcomes back sophomore
Alexis Rider (Delran, N.J./Delran), who was an NE10 All-Rookie selection in 2018, and Geaglone who was named Third Team All-NE10, in addition to the All-Rookie Team.
The Chargers were selected to finish 10th in this year's NE10 Preseason Coaches' Poll. They picked up their first two wins in program history last season with wins over Mercy and Southern Connecticut State.
SCOUTING THE MAVERICKS (0-1, 0-0 NE10)
Mercy suffered a 2-1 loss to Lindenwood (Mo.) at home in their season-opening match on Sunday. The Mavericks won the East Coast Conference Tournament title last season after upsetting No. 1 Molloy 1-0 in the championship match. Mercy is beginning its first season as an associate member of the Northeast-10 for field hockey. Senior Sabrina Anderson is the team's leading returning scorer after ranking third on the team last season with three goals.
ON DECK
The Chargers will return home to DellaCamera Stadium for back-to-back games against Franklin Pierce over the weekend, starting with a NE10 matchup on Saturday at 4 p.m. followed by a non-conference tilt against the Ravens at 12 p.m. on Sunday. Saturday's game will serve as the program's Hope Happens Here Game for mental health awareness.
