Chargers Dial Up Long Distance Plays in 37-7 Home Win Over AIC

WEST HAVEN, Conn. – Two touchdowns of 40+ yards for senior AJ Greene (Middle Island, N.Y./Newfield) opened up the scoring and the New Haven football team never looked back as they scored a 37-7 win over American International in the 2019 home opener, presented by Army ROTC. Leading the Blue and Gold on the day was junior quarterback Nick Robins (Nephi, Utah/Juab), the Connecticut National Guard Player of the Game, who finished with 221 yards and a pair of passing touchdowns while adding a rushing score with 10 yards on the ground.

As a team, New Haven finished with 374 yards in total offense with 153 rushing yards added to the 221 passing yards from Robins who finished 13-of-20 and averaged 17.0 yards per completion. Robins most frequented target was graduate receiver Ju'an Williams (Springfield, Mass./Springfield Central) who completed five catches for 73 yards while Green finished with 105 yards on three catches including touchdowns of 58 yards and 40 yards.

On the ground, sophomore Shamar Logan (Brooklyn, N.Y./High School for Youth & Community Development) racked up a team-high 77 yards on 15 attempts to lead five players in the running game. Logan, who started for the second game in a row, also picked up the biggest gain of the day, a 23-yard run scamper that was one of two where he went for 20+ yards. Rounding out the leaders in the ground game was Nyshere Woodson who hauled in 37 yards on nine attempts with one of those ending in a touchdown.

The Chargers defense opened up the game with a pair of sacks on the first two plays of the game as they forced a three-and-out for the Yellow Jackets on the opening drive. The defense wouldn't let up the remainder of the afternoon and was highlighted on the day with a pick six from junior Allah Sessions (Elmira, N.Y./Elmira), the Army ROTC Play of the Game.  The linebacker pulled in a pass that was tipped by graduate Zach Cofrancesco (East Haven, Conn./Notre Dame) at the line of scrimmage and returned it 58 yards up the left sideline to the house.

Cofrancesco closed out the day with a team-high seven tackles, including six that were solo stops. Following him in leading the defense was graduate linebacker Anthony Malaguti (Hewitt, N.J./Don Bosco Prep) with five tackles, including one for loss. Overall, the Chargers registered six tackles for loss that all together accounted for 30 yards.
