GARDEN CITY, N.Y. – Junior Sean Skeens (Auckland, New Zealand) scored twice for the New Haven men's soccer team, including one with less than a minute remaining, but it was not enough as the Chargers dropped a 4-3 final at nationally ranked No. 1 Adelphi on Wednesday. Junior Estanislao Desseno (Buenos Aires, Argentina/Saint Patrick College) assisted on both of Skeens markers, and senior Nate Peduzzi (Old Lyme, Conn./Lyme-Old Lyme) also scored his team-leading fourth goal of the season.

The Chargers (2-3, 0-2 NE10) outshot Adelphi 20-17, while the Panthers (6-0, 2-0 NE10) held an 8-7 edge in shots on goal and an 8-6 edge in corner kicks.

The Panthers broke the ice first in the 11th minute when Peri Filippo put a shot on goal from the top of the box, forcing Stefano Lorusso (Auckland, New Zealand/Sacred Heart College) to make the initial save, but Aiden Keenan was there to put home the rebound for the 1-0 lead.

Adelphi struck for an insurance goal in the 27th minute when a ball was played in from midfield, which was intercepted, but mishandled by a Charger defender, resulting in Paolo Marciano picking up the loose ball and going in alone on the keeper, burying a shot into the lower right corner for a 2-0 lead.

The Chargers cut the deficit in half with a 36th-minute tally. Freshman Imanol Ruiz (Vitoria-Gasteiz, Spain/Sagrado Corazon Carmelitas) sent a pass across to the right, where Peduzzi stepped up and drilled a long shot across into the top left corner just under the bar to get New Haven within one heading into halftime.

The Chargers nearly drew even right out of the locker room, with Alessandro Papplardo hitting the crossbar in the opening minute of the second half.

Lorusso kept it a one-goal game with a sliding save on a contested shot from in close in the 51st minute.

Adelphi used two quick goals from Keenan to grow the lead to 4-1. The first came in the 56th minute on a shot from the top right corner of the box, sliding it along the turf into the bottom left corner to put the Panthers up 3-1. Just over one minute later, Keenan completed the hat trick by putting one top shelf from the left side of the box to quickly increase the lead to three.

Skeens got the Chargers back within two with his first goal in the 66th minute, heading home a header by the back post off a free kick assist from Desseno.

Sophomore Alvaro Ezpeleta (Vigo, Spain/Colegio Amor de Dios) had chance for New Haven in the 70th minute when Skeens threaded a ball into the box, but the keeper came out to make the stop.

The Chargers refused to go away and drew within one in the 90th minute, as Skeens teamed up with Desseno once again to head home a ball off a free kick to make it a 4-3 game with 56 seconds left, in what proved to be the Chargers' last scoring opportunity.

New Haven will hit the road once again this Saturday afternoon for a NE10 matchup at Saint Anselm at 3 p.m.
