WEST HAVEN, Conn. – The University of New Haven women's tennis team (1-1, 1-1 NE10) picked up its first victory in 2019 in sweeping fashion with a 7-0 decision over the visiting Saint Micheal's Purple Knights on Sunday afternoon at the New Haven Tennis Courts.
Leading the Blue and Gold on the afternoon was the trio of Stephanie Gonzalez (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico/Academia Maria Reina), sophomore Nicole Mika (Staten Island, N.Y./Laurel Springs) and freshman Kacie Banks (Marietta, Ga./Marietta) who all swept their singles decision with 6-0, 6-0 straight sets while all three were also victorious in doubles play. Among the trio, Gonzalez and Mika partnered up for the second of three victories in doubles play when they defeated Ava Albis and Abby Edelmann by a 6-2 final.
The first victory in doubles play came from Banks and her partner Lilia Rodriguez (Bayamon, Puerto Rico/Colegio Marista) who took down Abby Ramsey and Brittany Katz, 6-2 at first doubles. Rounding out the doubles sweep of the Purple Knights was Katherine MacPhail (Park City, Utah/Judge Memorial Catholic) and Alexa Orlando (Frederick, Md./Middletown) who scored a 6-3 decision over Saint Michael's Caroline Sumner and Annie Serkes.
In singles play, Gonzalez, Mika and Banks earned their points with the straight set victories with Gonzalez opening things up with her victory over Ramsay in first singles. Mika's victory came at third singles over Serkes while Banks defeated Edelmann at fourth singles.
Rodriguez earned her singles points at the second doubles position defeating Katz by 6-2, 6-0 sets. Alexa Orlando (Frederick, Md./Middletown) also took her victory in straight sets with a 6-0, 6-2 decision over Sumner. MacPhail, playing in the sixth position, saw the closest battle in singles play, rebounding after dropping her opening set 5-7 to win 6-3, 11-9.
New Haven will return to action on Wednesday afternoon with a second-straight home match and a third-straight Northeast-10 Conference contest when they host the Franklin Pierce Ravens with the match scheduled to start at 3:00 p.m.
