Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Bailey Nets Game Winner with 2.8 Seconds Remaining in OT as Chargers Take Down Stonehill

NORTH EASTON, Mass. – With just 2.8 seconds remaining, senior guard Elijah Bailey (Freeport, N.Y./The Hotchkiss School) drove from outside the arc down the right side of the key, kissing the rock off the glass for an 85-83 overtime victory against Stonehill. Bailey closed out the game leading all players with 29 points, one of four Chargers to register double figures.

After a stop on the other end with senior Kessly Felizor (Hightstown, N.J./Hightstown) pulling down the board, the Chargers would call timeout with 27.3 seconds remaining and the game tied at 83. That allowed head coach Ted Hotaling to set up the final play of the night. After holding until late in the 25 second shot clock, Bailey took advantage of the one-on-one opportunity driving the outside the lane and sinking the game-winner. The ensuing three-quarter court attempt by the Skyhawks was short of the mark as time expired.

Joining Bailey in leading the Chargers was redshirt junior Derrick
Rowland and freshman Davontrey Thomas (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Poughkeepsie) who each finished with 14 points and sophomore point guard Quashawn Lane (Trenton, N.J./Trenton Catholic Academy) who added 11 points. Redshirt sophomore Antonio Lopez (Medford, N.Y./St. Anthony's) followed with nine points to lead a pair of scorers off the bench who contributed 11 bench points to the 85 total.

Bailey's game-high 29 points came on an 11-of-20 effort from the field with a pair of those buckets from outside the three point arc, while he was also 5-of-8 from the free throw line. Both Rowland and Thomas would finished with five total field goals while Thomas led the Blue and Gold's distance shooting with a trio of three pointers.

As a team, New Haven finished the game shooting 53.6 percent, the second straight game shooting 50% or better. Overall, the Chargers connected on 30-of-56 field goal attempts with just six buckets from outside the arc. The Blue and Gold also added 19 points at the free throw line, which came on 23 attempts for an 82.6 percent effort. Leading the way at the free throw line was Lane who finished a perfect 5-of-5 as he remains perfect at the line on the season at 18-of-18.

The Chargers best shooting on the night came in the opening half when they connected on 18-of-29 attempts for a 62.1 percent effort, building a 45-24 lead at the intermission. The Chargers did surrender a 31-25 rebounding lead to the Skyhawks with Felizor leading the Chargers with seven total boards, including the one which led to the game-winning bucket in overtime. Overall, seven players contributed on the boards with Bailey and Thomas following Felizor with five each.

Defensively, New Haven forced the Skyhawks into 12 total turnovers, while committing just six of their own. The Chargers would turn those 12 turnovers into 13 points on the other end of the floor. Out of those 12 turnovers, the Chargers registered nine steals, led by Felizor who finished with three, extending his team lead to 19 total on the season.

The Chargers will return home for a midweek match-up on Wednesday, January 22 against Saint Anselm as they continue cross-divisional play. Tip-off against the Hawks is slated for 7:30 p.m. at Charger Gym, following the women's game.
