Last Second Jumper Sinks Chargers in Heartbreaking 59-57 Loss at Assumption

WORCESTER, Mass. – A long jumper with one second remaining befell the New Haven women's basketball team, 59-57 at Assumption on Saturday afternoon. Junior Brie Pergola (Torrington, Conn./Torrington) led the way with a team-high 15 points, sophomore Camryn DeBose (Wellington, Fla./Wellington Community) scored 13 points and freshman Aurora Deshaies (Syracuse, N.Y./Bishop Ludden) added 12. Junior Bionca Chambers (Bronx, N.Y./New Milford) scored eight. The Chargers, who led for over 30 minutes of action, outscored Assumption 28-18 in the paint and 21-11 off turnovers.

New Haven (12-6, 6-5 NE10) finished the game shooting 39.7 percent overall, 4-of-12 from beyond the arc, and limited the Greyhounds (10-9, 4-7 NE10) to 35.1 percent from the floor and 25.9 percent from three-point range. The teams drew even in rebounding (36) and turnovers (21).

FIRST QUARTER
  • Luzdali Ocasio (Davenport, Fla./New Hampton) made a great hustling effort to save a ball to Pergola who got the Chargers on the board. Pergola later added a putback attempt to pull New Haven within 7-6.
  • DeBose lobbed one down low to Deshiaes for a layup, the DeBose picked off the pass at the foul line and took it all the way for two to bring the New Haven run to 11-0 and build a 13-7 lead, forcing an Assumption timeout at 4:05.
  • A DeBose second chance effort brought the edge to 15-7 before an Assumption three-pointer ended the 13-0 run.
  • New Haven shot 50 percent in the opening frame to hold a 24-13 lead after one, outscoring the Hounds 12-2 in the paint.
  • The 24 points was tied for the second-most points in any quarter this season by the Chargers.
SECOND QUARTER
  • Assumption scored the first four points of the second quarter to get within 24-17 as New Haven whistled for timeout at 7:13.
  • A Chambers basket, followed by another steal and score from DeBose built the lead back to 11 before Assumption scored nine unanswered to pull within two with 1:07 left until halftime.
  • Pergola began the Charger response of five unanswered to end the half, knocking down a triple from the corner and Chambers followed with a driving layup in the closing seconds to extend the New Haven lead to 33-26 going into the locker room.
  • The Chargers scored 17 points off six Assumption turnovers in the opening half.
THIRD QUARTER
  • Deshaies scored two straight layups, the second of which came off a Jasmine White (Huntington, N.Y./St. Anthony's) assist to extend the Charger run to 10-0 to start the second half and get the lead back to 11.
  • White connected on a three-pointer from straight-on to keep the lead at nine past the midway point before Assumption got back within four.
  • Chambers stepped up and sank a big pull-up jumper to get the lead back to eight late in the quarter as New Haven held a 46-40 lead after three.
  • Both teams had strong shooting efforts in the third, as the Chargers outshot Assumption 54.5 percent to 46.2 percent in the period.
FOURTH QUARTER
  • Five quick Greyhound points to start the fourth got the team within one at 46-45, forcing a New Haven timeout at 7:35.
  • After a three-point play gave the Hounds a 48-46 lead, but Deshiaes quickly retied the game for New Haven.
  • Pergola knocked in two from the line to re-knot the score 50-50, then sank a left-wing three to pull New Haven within 54-53 with just over three minutes left.
  • Kim Talley (Quakertown, Pa./Lansdale Catholic) gave New Haven the lead back with a long two-pointer from the right corner to push the Chargers in front 55-54 with 2:15 to play.
  • The Hounds came back with a three-pointer to regain a two-point edge with 45 seconds left, but New Haven answered right back as Chambers grabbed a loose ball in the lane and fed Deshaies for the layup that tied the score with 22.8 seconds left.
  • Brianna Capacchione delivered the game-winner for Assumption with exactly one second left, knocking down a contested fade-away jumper to give the Greyhounds the 59-57 win.
The Chargers will head out on the road once again on Tuesday for a NE10 matchup at Southern New Hampshire. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
