Men’s Basketball Drops Tough 94-91 Overtime Loss at Adelphi

GARDEN CITY, N.Y. – Redshirt sophomore Derrick Rowland (Cohoes, N.Y./Green Tech) scored a career-high 32 points for the Chargers, but the team came up on the short end of a tough 94-91 overtime loss on Saturday at Adelphi. Rowland's career-high came on a 12-for-15 shooting performance from the floor, including a 6-for-7 effort from three-point range. He also added six assists.

Junior Elijah Bailey (Freeport, N.Y./The Hotchkiss School) dropped 17 points on 6-for-13 shooting and four three-pointers, and freshman Davontrey Thomas (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Poughkeepsie) scored 13 points. Senior Kessly Felizor (Hightstown, N.J./Hightstown) scored eight points to go with a game-high 15 rebounds, and D'Nathan Knox (Wheatley Heights, N.Y./Half Hollow Hills East) scored nine points on 4-of-6 from the field.

New Haven (4-7, 2-4 NE10) shot a season-high 58.2 percent (32-for-55) from the floor and topped the 50 percent mark from three-point range for the first time this season at an even 60 percent (15-for-25).

The Chargers fell behind 12-7 early before scoring nine straight points on three consecutive three-pointers, the latter two which came from Bailey to take a 16-12 lead at the 11:41 mark.

New Haven built an eight-point lead midway through the half thanks to a 7-0 run, starting with a three-pointer by Quashawn Lane (Trenton, N.J./Trenton Catholic Academy) from the top of the key, then four straight from Antonio Lopez (Medford, N.Y./St. Anthony's) to build a 28-20 lead at the 8:36 mark.

Thomas knocked down his first three of the game to make it a double-digit lead for the Blue and Gold for first time at 33-23, continuing a stretch of 10 made field goals in 11 attempts for the Chargers.

The Chargers scored the final six points of the half to take a 42-36 lead into the locker room. New Haven finished the period shooting a red-hot 68.2 percent (15-of-22) from the floor and 70 percent (7-for-10) from three-point range.

The Panthers got within two early in the second half before Rowland rained in a triple from the left wing to make it 50-45. Adelphi then ran off 11 straight points in just 1:42 to take control, forcing a New Haven timeout.

Thomas broke the spell with his third triple of the game from the left wing to make it 56-53, but Adelphi provided the answer each time until Felizor nailed a jumper, then grabbed a steal moments later and fed Rowland for a layup to make it 64-62, forcing a AU timeout at 9:58.

New Haven made it a one-possession game once more with back-to-back layups from Knox made it 68-66. After falling behind by five, the Chargers ripped off a 12-2 run over the next 5:17, capped by two huge back-to-back three pointers from Rowland to put New Haven back on top 78-73 with 1:34 to go.

Adelphi got within 80-77 before sending Thomas to the foul line with 23.4 seconds remaining; where Thomas calmly swished home both free throws to bring the lead up to five. Adelphi answered with a quick three before sending Rowland to the line, where he hit one to make it 83-80. Adelphi connected on the game-tying, pull-up three pointer with 5.9 seconds left that sent the game into overtime.

In the extra stanza, Felizor came away with a huge block on a dunk attempt on the defensive end, then Rowland found Knox in transition for the layup on the offensive end, and hit the ensuing free throw after a foul to tie the game at 89 with 1:51 left.

After Adelphi retook the lead with a three-pointer, Rowland drove the lane and got New Haven within one with 6.8 seconds left, but Adelphi was able to ice the game away with two free throws and a turnover.

The Chargers will return to action on Wednesday evening at Saint Thomas Aquinas in their final non-conference matchup of the season.
