White’s Career Game Powers Chargers to 64-59 Win over Franklin Pierce

WEST HAVEN Conn. – Junior Jasmine White (Huntington, N.Y./St. Anthony's) recorded her first career-double-double with career-highs of 15 points and 10 rebounds to help power New Haven to a 64-59 win over Franklin Pierce at Charger Gymnasium on Saturday afternoon. Fellow junior Brie Pergola (Torrington, Conn./Torrington) chipped in 16 points, six rebounds and five assists on 4-of-7 shooting, including 3-of-4 from beyond the arc. Senior Micah Wormack (Cumberland, Md./Allegany) added 12 points and four rebounds. Freshmen Aurora Deshaies (Syracuse, N.Y./Bishop Ludden) also tabbed eight points and eight rebounds on 4-of-6 from the field. Redshirt sophomore Luzdali Ocasio (Davenport, Fla./New Hampton) tied Pergola for the team-high five assists.

The Chargers (14-6, 8-5 NE10) shot 38.3 percent from the floor in the game, including a 5-for-7 mark from three-point range in the third quarter. Defensively, the Chargers outrebounded the Ravens 41-37 and limited FPU (9-11, 3-10 NE10) to 17-of-53 (32.1 percent) from the floor. New Haven also held a 28-12 edge in the paint.

FIRST QUARTER
  • Both teams traded baskets in the early going. White found Wormack down low for two to get the Chargers within 11-10 before FPU build a game-high four-point edge at 14-10 with 1:45 remaining.
  • Bionca Chambers (Bronx, N.Y./New Milford) fed Wormack for a layup to beat the buzzer and pull New Haven within 14-12 at the end of the quarter.
SECOND QUARTER
  • Deshaies tied it early in the second quarter with a putback before the Ravens went back up by four, 20-16.
  • New Haven retook the lead with a mini 6-0 run, featuring a jumper from Camryn DeBose (Wellington, Fla./Wellington Community), and consecutive layups from Deshaies to go on top 22-20 at the midway point.
  • Deshaies made it six points in a row with another layup to put New Haven up 24-23.
  • White and Wormack scored two apiece to grow the lead to 30-24 as New Haven carried a three-point, 30-27 lead into the locker room.
THIRD QUARTER
  • New Haven scored the first 10 points of the second half to take control, starting with the team's first three-pointer of the game from White.
  • Pergola found Wormack down low to build the lead to 10, then Pergola knocked down a three of her own to grow the lead to 13, forcing another Ravens timeout at the 5:36 mark.
  • Franklin Pierce scored the next seven unanswered points after the timeout to crawl within 40-34, forcing a New Haven timeout at 3:54.
  • New Haven worked to get the edge back to 10 on three occasions over the rest of the quarter, including a three-pointer from Ocasio, a jumper by White, and New Haven's fifth three on seven attempts by Pergola with just six seconds left to build a 51-41 lead heading into the fourth.
FOURTH QUARTER
  • Ocasio fed White for a layup to get the lead to a game-high 12 in the opening seconds.
  • Franklin Pierce chipped away and used a 10-2 run to make it a one-possession game at 58-55 with 3:10 remaining.
  • The Ravens would get within three twice more, with Pergola and Ocasio answering each time with free throws.
  • The Chargers defended three three-point attempt in the final minute, and Pergola sank two more free throws to thwart the rally and earn the five-point victory.
Next up, New Haven will welcome Pace to Charger Gymnasium on Wednesday evening at 5:30 p.m.
