Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Chargers Take Double OT Thriller from Bentley 88-82, Advance to NE10 Quarterfinal Sunday at Le Moyne

WALTHAM, Mass. – It took an extra 10 minutes, but the New Haven men's basketball team will play on and head from Waltham, Mass. to Syracuse, N.Y. for a date with the NE10 Southwest No. 2 seed Le Moyne Dolphins on Sunday at 4:00 p.m. The Chargers advanced to the quarterfinal round following an 88-82 victory over Northeast No. 4 Bentley on Friday night at the Dana Center.

Leading the Chargers on the night was senior Elijah Bailey (Freeport, N.Y./The Hotchkiss School) and freshman Davontrey Thomas (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Poughkeepsie) who finished with 24 and 20 points, respectively, the latter of which set a career-high for the rookie out of Poughkeepsie, N.Y. Overall, four Chargers finished in double figures with sophomore Quashawn Lane (Trenton, N.J./Trenton Catholic Academy) adding 14 points and redshirt junior Derrick Rowland (Cohoes, N.Y./Green Tech) inching closer to the 1,000 point plateau with a dozen points.

Among all the leading scorers, Thomas put up the best numbers of the night, connecting on 6-of-7 from the field and going a perfect 7-of-7 at the free throw line. He also flew past his previous career best in the rebounding battle, hauling in 14 boards to lead the Blue and Gold and close out his second career double double.

Also among the leaders from the field was Lane who finished 5-of-8 overall, with a three pointer, and going 3-of-4 at the free throw line. Lane also pulled down six boards and dished out four assists. Bailey led the Chargers outside shooting efforts as he converted three of the team's seven total buckets from outside the arc.

As a team, the Chargers closed out the night shooting 41.1 percent from the field, connecting on 30-of-73 field goal attempts, including the seven from long range. New Haven also added 21 points at the free throw line, those coming on 28 attempts.

The Blue and Gold also blew by their previous team-high of 37 rebounds, pulling down a game-best 56 boards and holding Bentley to just 37 total rebounds. Thomas' 14 rebounds led all players in the game while he was one of two Chargers in double figures with senior Kessly Felizor (Hightstown, N.J./Hightstown) finishing with 11 bounds to go along with eight points.

Bentley led for the majority of the game with the Chargers not managing to tie the score until the 5:53 mark in the second half when Felizor converted on a second-chance layup. They would tie the score again at 61 on a three pointer from Bailey with 4:23 remaining before the Falcons regained a four-point, 65-61 advantage with 2:59 remaining.

From that points, the Chargers would score six of the final eight points with a driving layup from Thomas with 24 seconds remaining knotting the game at 24. The Falcons would have an attempt just before the buzzer but the Chargers would corral the rebound and force the first extra frame.

In the first overtime, neither team would lead by more than three points with that advantage falling in favor of the Falcons following a pair of free throws with 2:45 remaining. New Have would hold the Falcons scoreless from that point on with Rowland score the final four points of the half, two at the free throw line and the final two with 50 second remaining on a driving layup.

After the Falcons layup attempt with 22 seconds remaining in the first overtime was off the mark, the Chargers would put up three attempts in the final 10 seconds, two of which were blocked and the third off the mark as time expired for the second time.

In the second overtime period, the Falcons would again take the early lead with the Chargers taking their first lead in extra time on a layup from Bailey with 3:36 remaining. That lead change would turn out to be the last of the night as the Blue and Gold extended their lead to as much as seven and never allowed Bentley closer than three which came on a three pointer from the corner off the hands of Isaac Martin with 51 seconds remaining. D'Nathan Knox (Wheatley Heights, N.Y./Half Hollow Hills East) would convert 3-of-4 at the free throw line in the final 11 seconds to ice the victory. The senior would close out the night with three points and a career-high seven rebounds.
