WEST HAVEN, Conn. – Four Chargers collected hat tricks in Saturday's women's lacrosse season opener to power No. 13 New Haven to a 22-4 victory over Holy Family at Kathy Zolad Stadium. Seniors
Julia Jette (Franklin, Mass./Franklin) and
Caroline Maher (Mansfield, Mass./Mansfield) led the way with four goals and three assists each, while senior
Kendra Nolan (Oak Ridge, N.J./Jefferson Township) and junior
Emily Holland (Londonderry, N.H./Londonderry) scored three goals apiece. Freshman
Cameryn Antler (Hebron, Conn./Mercy) scored two goals in her collegiate debut, while
Meredith Karsonovich (Hampton Falls, N.H./St. Thomas Aquinas),
Marina Skelly (Ronkonkoma, N.Y./Connequot),
Mikayla Cotter (Wrentham, Mass./Bishop Feehan),
Annie Acquavita (Cheshire, Conn./Cheshire),
Raven Linton (Lawrenceville, N.J./Notre Dame) and
Brynn Eilbacher (Cherry Hill, N.J./Camden Catholic) all scored one goal each.
The Chargers outshot the Tigers 41-10 and dominated draw controls 24-3. Seniors
Erica Rinsky (North Caldwell, N.J./West Essex) and
Gianna Guerra (Stony Point, N.Y./North Rockland) split time in goal, combining for six saves.
The team's 22 goals ties the program record for the most goals in a season opener, and ties for the most goals in a home opener.
New Haven started fast and never looked back, scoring three goals within 1:15 early in the first half, starting with two straight by Maher and one from Linton for the early 3-0 lead at the 25:02 mark. After the Tigers got one back, New Haven ripped off 10 unanswered goals from eight different players to go up 13-1 at the 8:20 mark.
Holy Family followed with a pair of goals to get back within 10, but the Chargers kept the running clock rule in effect with two goals to end the half. Jette assisted on an Antler tally with 1:05 remaining, then Cotter served a pass down towards the front of the goal off the draw to Jette, who buried it just ahead of the horn for the 15-3 lead going into the locker room.
Holland opened the second half with two straight goals as New Haven scored the first four goals of the second half to build a 19-3 edge before the Tigers got on the board once again off a man-up, free position goal at 8:58.
The Chargers ended the game with three unassisted goals with Antler, Karsonovich and Eilbacher all finding the back of the net over the final 5:30 of regulation.
New Haven will return to action next Saturday with a 1 p.m. faceoff against New York Tech at Zolad Stadium.
