VIERA, Fla. – The New Haven softball team wrapped up its trip to the Sunshine State on Sunday afternoon dropping a 4-0 decision to Angelo State in the final game of the Florida Tech Invitational.
Overall, New Haven scattered four hits in their final game of the southern trip with all four hits coming from different batters. The top of the order proved most productive for the Blue and Gold with Ava Fitzmaurice (Greenville, N.Y./Greenville) and Nahtali Simpson (West Orange, N.J./West Orange) each securing a single hit in the lead off and number two positions in the lineup.
Clean-up batter, catcher Jovanna Hillman (Seymour, Conn./Saint Joseph) also finished with a hit while right fielder Hailey Polisano (Howell, N.J./Howell) wrapped up the Chargers offense with a single out of the number nine position in the lineup. Polisano also secured the only stolen base of the day for New Haven.
Suffering the loss in the circle, her first of the season, was freshman Selena Aponte (Lumberton, N.J./Rancocas Valley) who threw a complete game allowing four runs, two of which were earned on six hits and a pair of walks. She also struck out seven batters, a season-best for the Chargers four pitcher rotation.
The Chargers will not return to the field for over a month when they travel to the Carolina's for a six-game trip that includes stops at Barton (Mar. 17), UNC Pembroke (Mar. 18) and Francis Marion (Mar. 19).
