Late Run Downs Chargers in Hard-Fought 55-44 Loss at Saint Anselm in NE10 Tournament

MANCHESTER, N.H. – Tied after three quarters and trailing by one with just over seven minutes remaining, Saint Anselm closed the game on a 13-3 run to down New Haven 55-44 in the quarterfinals on the Northeast-10 Conference Championship Tournament on Sunday afternoon.

Sophomore Camryn DeBose (Wellington, Fla./Wellington Community) led the team with 17 points on 8-of-15 shooting, freshman Aurora Deshaies (Syracuse, N.Y./Bishop Ludden) scored 12 points on 5-of-9 from the field and tied for a team-leading eight rebounds. Junior Bionca Chambers (Bronx, N.Y./New Milford) scored seven points and Micah Wormack (Cumberland, Md./Allegany) hauled in eight rebounds and added four blocks in her collegiate finale.

New Haven held Saint Anselm's offense, which averages nearly 75 points per game, to a season-low 55 points. The Chargers are the only team to hold the Hawks to under 60 points all season, having done so twice, previously holding Saint Anselm to 58 at Charger Gymnasium back on January 22.

For the game, the Chargers shot 34.0 percent from the floor while holding the Hawks to 36.1 percent. Saint A's controlled the glass 44-32 and outscored New Haven 15-6 on second-chances.

New Haven finishes the season at 18-9 overall, their first time with consecutive 18-win seasons since 2014-15. Saint Anselm advances to the NE10 semifinals where they will face Adelphi on Thursday.

QUOTES FROM THE COACH: Debbie Buff
"I thought we played a great defensive game to hold them to 20 points below their average. After we tied them at the end of the third quarter, we took a few bad shots and helped off the wrong person which allowed them some three-point attempts."

"We have the culture of the program moving in the right direction with a majority of the players returning next season. Our staff is proud of the fight in this team and finishing the season with 18 wins. They were enjoyable to coach and we have some great memories."

FIRST QUARTER
  • New Haven started fast by hitting their first two layups from Luzdali Ocasio (Davenport, Fla./New Hampton) and DeBose to go up 4-0 in the opening minute.
  • A DeBose jumper in the lane made it 6-2 Chargers before the Hawks tied it up with a pair of baskets before the media timeout at 4:17.
  • Saint Anselm extended their run to 9-0 to take an 11-6 lead, forcing a New Haven timeout at 2:30.

SECOND QUARTER
  • Chambers broke the 16-0 run with a short jumper after a steal by Brie Pergola (Torrington, Conn./Torrington) to make it a 10-point game once again at 18-8 at 7:34.
  • Ocasio turned defense into offense by corralling a steal and taking it to the basket to draw the foul before hitting both free throws.
  • DeBose scored five more points before the end of the half, capped by a three-pointer just ahead of the buzzer to cut it to 24-15 at halftime.
THIRD QUARTER
  • The Chargers controlled the tempo in the third quarter, heating up offensively to shoot 56.3 percent in the period, outscore the Hawks 20-11 and take a two-point lead in the closing moments of the quarter.
