New Haven Athletics: Celebrating Centennial Founders Say with the Top 100 Charger Athletics Moments

As part of the University of New Haven's Centennial Celebration, the Department of Athletics unveiled the Top 100 Moments from the first 100 years in Charger Nation. Below is a breakdown of those top moments.

Moments 6-15

6.       Nov. 27, 1976  The Men's Soccer team becomes the first Charger team to compete for a National Championship in school history

7.       On the back of 1,687 yards on the ground in 1993, Roger Graham won the prestigious Harlon Hill Trophy

8.       June 1985Cameron Drew becomes the first UNH baseball player drafted in the First Round of the MLB draft, taken 12th overall by the Houston Astros

9.       December 5, 1992 - The New Haven football team played in the programs first ever NCAA semifinal game  versus Jacksonville State (L, 46-35)

10.   September 5, 1992 – The Charger football team goes to in-state rival UConn and defeats the Division I Huskies 14-13 in one of the biggest upsets in program history

11.   December 7, 1996 - Women's volleyball made its 7th trip to the NCAA Quarterfinals (Final Eight) and finished the season ranked ninth in the final AVCA Division II Poll – the highest ranking in the final poll in school history

12.   November 26, 2011 – Just two years after a five-year hiatus, football defeats Kutztown in their first NCAA game since the 1997 national championship game

13.   New Haven standout right hander Steve Bedrosian is drafted by the Atlanta Braves in the third round of the 1978 MLB Draft. He would go on to be the longest tenured MLB player for UNH and won the 1987 National League Cy Young Award with the Philadelphia Phillies.

14.   Gary Liberatore concludes his Charger basketball career with an all-time New England scoring record of 3,176 points (Still the most scored by any collegiate player in NE basketball history)

15.   November 27, 1977 - For the second year in a row, the UNH men's soccer team advanced to the national semifinals. The Chargers would finish third with a 2OT shootout victory over Wisconsin-Green Bay

Moments 16-25

16.   In its eighth postseason appearance, the 1984 Men's Soccer team advanced to the National Semifinals

17.   1961 - Under the leadership of newly appointed Director of Athletics, Don Ormrod, New Haven College begins official varsity athletic competition in men's basketball. New Haven College went 15-5 in its inaugural season with "Coach O" at the helm.

18.   In its second ever NCAA Championship appearance, the 1984 Women's volleyball team made advanced to the Final Eight for the first time after defeating Northeastern 3-1 in the Regional Championship

19.   1982 - Miles McPherson was the first Charger football player drafted in the NFL, taken as the 256th overall pick by the Los Angeles Rams

20.   1991 - Football standout Harry Boatswain became the highest ever football player drafted in the NFL draft when he was selected 137th overall by the San Francisco 49ers

21.   The nationally ranked No. 23 New Haven women's basketball team scored in the final seconds of the 2015 NCAA East Region Championship earning the program s second trip to the Elite Eight

22.   Sept 26, 2009 - Following the return of football to the University of New Haven, the field located on North Campus was officially dedicated in honor of longtime supporter Ralph F. DellaCamera

23.   November 11, 2005 – In its first NCAA Tournament appearance, Women's Soccer defeated C.W. Post 1-0 in double OT. (NOTE: just five days earlier the Chargers lost by the same score to the same team in 2OT in the ECC Championship game)

24.   November 13, 2007 - New Haven announced that it would be joining the prestigious Northeast-10 Conference in all sports with competition beginning in the fall of 2008

25.   November 15, 2008 in its first season in the NE10, the volleyball team won its first of six NE10 championships sweeping the first two matches in three sets before defeating Merrimack in five-set thriller

Moments 26-50 (in no particular order)

·         April 6, 1963 – In what was the inaugural year of varsity athletics at New Haven, the Chargers baseball team swept New Bedford Tech (8-5, 7-6) to open its program history

·         1987 – Standout Joy Jeter became the first women's basketball player all-time to earn All-American honors, her first of three Kodak WBCA All-America accolades. Jeter would graduate as the all- time leading scorer in program history

·         1969 – The New Haven baseball team made its first NAIA world series

·         November 21, 1992 – The Charger football team advanced to the postseason for the first time in school history, defeating West Chester 38-26 in the opening round

·         2013 – Playing in front of a home crowd, the New Haven baseball team won its first NE10 Championship defeating Merrimack 6-4 in the deciding game

·         1987 – The men's basketball team made its first appearance in the NCAA Tournament advancing to the New England Regionals at New Hampshire College

·         1982 - in the first year competing in a conference, the volleyball team won its first of nine straight NECC conference titles

·         1988 - Appearing in the NCAA Tournament in a second-straight year, the men's basketball team won its first postseason game defeating Quinnipiac 96-62

·         1974 - After transitioning out of the NAIA, the Charger baseball team makes its first NCAA World Series, finishing 2-2 in its first of 15 World Series appearances

·         1965-66 - The men's basketball team made its first ever national championship appearance in the NAIA Division II Tournament

·         September 15, 1973 - New Haven competed in its first ever varsity football game, falling to Trenton State 24-0

·         1978 - Bob Turcio hit what is considered the first home run over the 35 foot metallic green scoreboard at historic Yale Field against SCSU

·         2012 - Football head coach Pete Rossomando earned national recognition when he was named the Liberty Mutual Division II Coach of the Year

·         Spring 1970 - Along with expansion of the University, shovels were put in the ground to begin construction on Charger Gymnasium

·         May 16, 2010 - The softball team defeated crosstown rival Southern Connecticut State University in the NCAA tournament for their third win in as many days, advancing to its first NCAA Super Regional

·         May 3, 2009 - In its first season in the NE10, women's lacrosse defeated Southern New Hampshire to win an NE10 Championship and earn the first NCAA Tournament Appearance in program history

·         2019 - As the No. 2 seed from the SW Division, the men's basketball team hosted the 2019 NE10 Championship game in front of a packed Charger Gym before advancing to the semifinals of the NCAA east regional

·         November 18, 2017 - In an impressive five-set thriller, the volleyball team won its sixth NE10 Championship under head coach Robin Salters in front of the largest crowd in Charger Gym against crosstown rival Southern Connecticut

·         May 12, 2017 - The women's Lacrosse team earned its first NCAA tournament victory versus Mercy (12-10)

·         2017 – After a number of upsets, the Baseball team earned hosting right for the 2017 NE10 championship, eventually defeating Franklin Pierce in back-to-back elimination games to win its second NE10 Championship

·         Women's Track & Field - Ada Udaya was named Ne10 Track Athlete of the Year in three straight years (2013, 2014 & 2015)

·         Oct. 2, 2018 – The newest varsity team in Charger Athletics, Field Hockey, earned the first win in program history vs Mercy (3-2)

·         1986 - The baseball field on North Campus was officially dedicated in honor of longtime head coach Frank "Porky" Vieira

·         1975-76 - Women's Sports were introduced at UNH with volleyball the first team to compete in a Chargers uniform (Defeated Western New England 2-0) – the first four women's sports were volleyball, women's basketball, women's tennis and softball

·         1981 - Miles McPherson became the first football player to be named an All-American

Moments 51-100 (in no particular order)

·         2004 - As a sophomore, men's track & field athlete Marius Skarbaskus finished fourth at the NCAA Indoor National Championships in the 800m run in a time of 1:50.91

·         1979 - Men's track & field athlete Ed Yearwood broke the American Indoor Track & Field record in the 400m dash, with his record encompassing all three divisions

·         2009 - Men's track & field athlete Kevin Downing was named the NE10 Men's Indoor Track & Field Rookie of the Year

·         1995 - Jo Lynn Cimino became the first UNH softball player to earn All-America honors

·         1980 - Ray Michanczyk became the first UNH football player to sign an NFL contract when he signed with the NY Jets

·         1995 - Softball made its first of 12 NCAA Tournament appearances which also included the program's first NCAA tournament victory, 6-5 over American International

·         1971 - New Haven athletics transition to NCAA from NAIA under then Director of Athletics Joe Machnik

·         1965 - After playing for the Chargers first three varsity baseball teams, John Anquillare became the programs first two-time All-American

·         1967-68 - In just its fifth season of existence, the men's ice hockey team won the Worcester College Hockey League Championship

·         2012 - Men's track & field athlete Matt Jeune won the NE10 title in the High Jump with a height of 2.20m (7'2¼")

·         1984 - After helping lead the volleyball team to its first NCAA appearances and first NCAA Final Eight appearances, Geraldine Mattaur was named first All-American in program history 

·         1968 - The men's basketball team won its  first national postseason game 69-68 over Albany State in the NAIA Tournament

·         1988 - Men's basketball player Herb Watkins became the first men's basketball player to earn First Team All-American honors after leading the team in scoring for the third straight season and closing out his career second all-time in scoring

·         November 23, 2001 - In its 15th straight appearance in the NCAA Tournament, Volleyball defeated Bryant in straight sets to advance to the Final Eight for the 10th time in school history

·         2006 - A 2006 All-American, Crystal Lindsay graduated as the all-time leading scorer in UNH women's soccer history with 185 points and 82 goals. Her 82 goals remains tied for 17th all-time in NCAA D2 history

·         March 20, 2001 - Women's Lacrosse was added as the eighth women's sports offered by New Haven with their first game coming against Merrimack

·         1982 - Men's Ice Hockey player Scott Brazis became the first and only Charger to earn ECAC All-Star honors 

·         1979 - Men's Track & Field athlete Ed Yearwood finished 2nd in the 400m dash at the Division II Outdoor National Championship

·         February 23, 1966 - Men's basketball player Phil Andros pulled down a school record 36 rebounds against Bryant which at the time was an NAIA Single-Game record

·         2010 - A dynamic player, Breanne Gleason was named the East Region Pitcher and Player of the Year before earning her first of back-to-back All-American honors

·         1985 - Gina Paolilli became the first woman to be inducted in the UNH Athletics Hall of Fame

·         September 28, 1962 - Men's Soccer begins its inaugural varsity season. They finished that year with a 12-1 overall record

·         1970 - Men's Golf made the first ever NCAA Postseason appearance for any sport at New Haven with Doug Grabowski finishing second at the NCAA Championship, setting a course record with one of his rounds

·         1994 - Two-sport athlete John Raba earned All-America honors as a member of the men's lacrosse team after leading the team with 48 goals and 28 assists

·         September 30, 2017 – The main court at Charger Gymnasium was dedicated as Debbie Chin Court in honor of the long-time athletic director who retired in February 2017

·         February 15, 2003 - Gary Liberatore's #45 was officially retired. Liberatore's number is the only men's basketball number to be retired

·         1967 - Men's Soccer made its first post season appearance, earning a bid to the the NAIA Tournament (Area 8 Regionals)

·         October 18, 2016  - Field Hockey was introduced as the 17th varsity sport and would begin competition in fall 2017

·         April 25, 2018 - Mackenzie Reh was named IWLCA National Player of the Week, an honor she received four times in her career. She was the first women's lacrosse player in program history to earn the national weekly honor

·         1996 - First women's cross country team competed under head coach Jim Hanneken

·         April 23, 07 - Michael Moras drove in a school record 12 runs on five hits including three home runs against Assumption. His 12 RBI is one shy of an NCAA single game record

·         May 28, 2008 - Jen Fallon was named the Inside Lacrosse Division II Coach of the Year

·         1999 - Men's track & field's Kevin Ross was named the NECC Track & Field Championship Athlete of the Year after setting NECC records in the 200m and 400m events. He closed out his career a 3x All-American and 6x NCAA Qualifier

·         October 18, 1997 - With a 3-2 win over Dowling, the volleyball team won an NCAA Division II record 109 straight matches on its home court

·         1988 - Volleyball player Lisa Reza finished the 1988 season with 141 service aces which remains fifth most in a single season in D2 VB history

·         May 19, 2006 - Coach Frank "Porky" Vieira officially retired from coaching with his final game against Dowling. At the time of his retirement, Vieira led all Division II coaches with his 77.6% winning percentage

·         1970 – Doug Grabowski was the first and only UNH Golfer to earn All-American Honors

·         1978 - Baseball pitcher Tom Michalzcyk finished the season with an unblemished 13-0 record and a 1.58 ERA earning First Team All-America distinction

·         1967 Men's basketball player became the first New Haven player selected in the NBA draft when he was picked in the 11th round by the Chicago Bulls

·         1968 - Joe Lahoud became the first baseball player from New Haven to play in the MLB for the Boston Red Sox. He played 11 seasons overall

·         1983 - The New Haven volleyball team made its first NCAA Tournament appearance, advancing to the sweet 16

·         1971-72 - Men's Ice Hockey - Defenseman Henry Avelin tied the New England College Division record for most assists by a defenseman with 36

·         1990 - Men's track & field athlete Orville Sweeney was the second ever All-American from the track team. The honor for Sweeney came following a fifth place at the NCAA Indoor Championship in the long jump

·         2015 - Brittany Ast named IWLCA Division II Defender of the Year. She was one of two players who have earned IWLCA National Player of the Year accolades

·         September 18, 2000 - Men's soccer player Sahar Rostami finished with 15 points on 6 goals and three assists against STAC. His 15 points is tied for third most in a single game in Division II history

·         April 16, 2012 - The women's tennis team made its first NE10 postseason appearance versus Saint Michael's

·         September 9, 1993 - Women's soccer was added to the list of women's varsity sports, playing its first game against in-state rival Sacred Heart (L, 2-1)

·         1966 - Joe Lahoud became the first Baseball player to sign a professional contract with the Boston Red Sox

·         1969 - Richard Hildebrand graduated as the all-time leading scorer in UNH Hockey History with 194 points

·         1965 - Men's Soccer completes its only undefeated season in school history 10-0
