THE FIRST LOOK
Coming off of a convincing victory over Southern Connecticut in the NE10 opener in which the Chargers held the Owls out of the end zone, the Blue and Gold look to remain unbeaten in league action when they hit the road for the first time in 2021 to take on the Pace Setters.
SCOUTING THE CHARGERS
After a slow first quarter, the Chargers offense kicked into high gear en-route to a rout of rival Southern Connecticut, while defensively, the Chargers kept SCSU out of the end zone forcing them to try four field goals, of which they converted three. Quarterback Connor Degenhardt (Westford, Mass./Westford Academy) showed off his arm against the Owls, airing out TD passes of 70 and 93 yards, part of four passing TD's and a total of 355 yards. For the season, the transfer QB has 852 yards, completing 58% of his passes. His main target for the year has been transfer Dev Holmes (Troy, N.Y./Troy) who has 17 catches for 385 yards and four touchdowns. On the ground, the Blue and Gold rely heavily on 2019 Rookie of the Year Shamar Logan (Brooklyn, N.Y./Erasmus Hall High School) who has 208 net yards on 46 attempts for the year. Defensively, Ryan Hodgins (Flanders, N.J./Mount Olive) leads the Chargers with 25 tackles, while Khalim Cisse (Willingboro, N.J./Willingboro) joins him with 20+, registering 21 total on the season. All combined, New Haven's defense has 27 TFL's to their credit for a total of 108 yards, including eight sacks for 62 yards.
SCOUTING THE SETTERS
The Setters enter Saturday following a much needed bye week to reset after opening the year 0-3, including a 32-21 loss in their NE10 opener at Assumption. As a team, the Setters are averaging 22.3 points per game, while surrendering 35.7 ppg, while splitting their offense evenly with 437 net rushing yards and 596 passing yards. Defensively, the Setters need to find a way to stop the run game where opponents are averaging 288.3 yards against them, while also averaging 240 yards in the passing game. Marshalling the Setters offense is quarterback Carlton Aiken who has racked up 563 passing yards and five touchdowns, while he also leads the way on the ground with 228 rushing yards.
AIRING IT OUT
The 4,168 fans at DellaCamera Stadium finally had a chance to see the full potential of Connor Degenhardt's (Westford, Mass./Westford Academy) arm last weekend as he threw for 355 total yards, completing 14-of-21 passes, including four that ended in the end zone. Among those 14 passes were a pair of long range missiles, the first to Javon Turner (Newark, N.J./Paramus Catholic) for 70 yards and the second to Dev Holmes (Troy, N.Y./Troy) for 93 yards. The latter of those two passes was the longest play from scrimmage for the Chargers since October of 2000.
NO ONE SHALL ENTER
New Haven's defense stood tall on Saturday against its crosstown rival, not just holding the Owls to nine points but keeping the SCSU offense from scoring a touchdown on any of their 12 drives. Included in the defensive stronghold for New Haven were three red zone stands that all resulted in field goal attempts by the Owls. Included in those three red zone opportunities was a goal-line stand when the Owls were set up with first and goal at the two yard line but were forced back six yards and eventually held to a 24-yard field goal.
NEXT ON TAP
New Haven returns to West Haven for Homecoming when the host the Saint Anselm Hawks on Saturday, October 9. The Chargers look to avenge a road loss to the Hawks from the last time these two teams met in 2019. Kickoff from DellaCamera Stadium is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. with all of the action available live on the Charger Sports Network on NE10 NOW.
