BOX SCORE 2 WEST HAVEN, Conn. – The New Haven women's team swept a pair of matches on the road this weekend taking a 5-2 victory over Assumption on Saturday, before sweeping Molloy in a non-conference matchup Sunday 7-0. The Blue and Gold improve to .500 on the year at 5-5 overall and 4-4 Northeast-10 conference play.
In doubles play, the No. 2 doubles pairing for the Chargers went a combined 4-0 in the two matches to clinch both doubles points. Graduate student Gaayatri Shankar (Kochi, India/TocH Public School) and senior Nicole Mika (Staten Island, N.Y./Laurel Springs) made up the tandem, who took down their opponents at Assumption 6-2, and at Molloy 7-6, winning the tie break 7-6. Junior Alexa Orlando (Frederick, Md./Middletown) earned a pair of victories in dual play, winning with classmate Kacie Banks (Marietta, Ga./Marietta) Saturday 6-1, before teaming up with freshman Olivia Martinelli (Coral Springs, Fla./Broward Virtual School) for a 6-2 victory Sunday, their fourth win together this season.
Freshman Karim Carreras (Asuncion, Paraguay/Colegio Bautista de Villa Morra) swept the weekend at No. 1 singles for the Blue and Gold, beating the Greyhounds' Julia Chappell in three sets 6-2, 0-6, 6-4, and Molloy's Alyssa Baur in straight sets 6-4, 6-1, as she is now tied for the team high in singles wins with five. Orlando went undefeated in singles play as well, taking both her matches at No. 5 singles over Assumption's Yana Semerly 6-2, 6-2 and Molloy's Brooke Williams 8-0.
At No. 2 singles Shankar earned a straight set victory Saturday over Cara McCormack 6-2, 6-3 and at the No. 6 position graduate student Lilia Rodriguez (Bayamon, Puerto Rico/Colegio Marista) dropped just one game in a 6-1, 6-0 decision over Alexis Connolly to clinch the deciding games for the Chargers over Assumption.
Against Molloy, Mika earned a shutout victory over Kailey Chin 6-0, 6-0 at No. 3 singles, followed by sophomore Katherine MacPhail (Park City, Utah/Judge Memorial Catholic) who clinched a 6-1, 6-1 win over Bri Gonzalez. In the No. 6 spot sophomore Abby Murphy (Southington, Conn./Southington) took an 8-1 decision over Amanda Oppedisano
