BOX SCORE WEST HAVEN, Conn. – The New Haven women's tennis team ended the 2021 regular season on a high note, taking down Saint Michael's 6-1. With the win the Chargers move to 6-6 on the year, 5-5 in Northeast-10 Conference play, and now await the official postseason bracket from the Northeast-10 conference Saturday.
Prior to the match, the team honored its five-player graduating class, that included the Chargers' pair of graduate transfers Ivana Andric (Griesheim, Germany) and Gaayatri Shankar (Kochi, India/TocH Public School), alongside seniors Nicole Mika (Staten Island, N.Y./Laurel Springs) and Charlotte Vick (Englewood, Fla./Evansville North (Ind.)), and graduate Lilia Rodriguez (Bayamon, Puerto Rico/Colegio Marista) who departs after five seasons donning the Blue and Gold.
The adrenaline from the pregame festivities carried its way into the match, with all five players earning a win on the day. The Chargers swept the doubles rounds, with shutout victories in both the No. 1 and No. 3 contests, with Andric and Shankar making up the top-flight, and junior Alexa Orlando (Frederick, Md./Middletown) and Mika in the No. 3 match. Rodriguez and freshman Karim Carreras (Asuncion, Paraguay/Colegio Bautista de Villa Morra) picked up a 6-3 victory at No. 2 doubles, completing a sweep of the doubles round and the first point of the day.
Andric and Mika continued their impressive run on the day, winning their respective singles matches at the No. 1 and No. 4 positions in straight-set shutouts, 6-0, 6-0. Shankar finished not too far behind them, dropping just one game in a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 3 singles, followed by Vick who secured a 6-2, 6-2 win at the No. 6 position. Carreras would take the final point for the Blue and Gold on the afternoon at No. 2 singles with a 6-2, 6-1 sweep over Saint Michael's Ava Albis.
