MANCHESTER, N.H. – The New Haven offense stepped up when it mattered most slamming eight kills without committing a single error, pushing the Chargers to a five-set victory over Southern New Hampshire Saturday.
As a team, the Blue and Gold finished with a .274 hitting percentage, converting 64 of 179 total attacks, while assisting on all but six of those kills. The offense also added eight service aces to their totals, while defensively the team collected 89 digs and six total blocks.
The offensive onslaught in the final set was due in large part to a trio of service aces from freshman outside Macy Brown (Cadillac, Mich./Cadillac) who finished with a double-double, hammering a match-high 22 kills and collecting 18 digs defensively. Junior outside Emily Barry (Freeport, N.Y./Sacred Heart Academy) also finished in double figures on both ends of the floor, scattering 15 hammers across the five-sets in addition to 11 digs, two block assists and a pair of solo rejections to lead all players.
Senior right-side Jessica Akiona (Kapolei, Hawaii/La Pietra- Hawaii School for Girls) contributed 14 kills to the offense, while also leading the Chargers on the defensive end with a team-high 20 digs. The strong performance on both ends of the floor continued with freshman setter Sophia Leon-Tabor (Fort Myers, Fla./Fort Myers) who provided 49 assists while also adding four kills and 13 digs. Rilee Jessee (Edinburgh, Ind,/Columbus East) finished second on the team as the fifth player to tally ten or more digs, corralling 19, the third highest mark in the contest.
The Blue and Gold will have the midweek off before hosting a pair of matches Friday and Saturday to close the month of October. Saint Anslem comes to town Friday, before Saint Michael's makes the trip to West Haven Saturday, with first serve in both matches scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
