How Sweep It Is; Volleyball Takes Le Moyne in Straight Sets

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The New Haven women's volleyball team won its eighth match in a row this afternoon with a straight set sweep of Le Moyne. With the win, the Chargers improve to 13-5 overall, and a perfect 3-0 in conference this season.

The Blue and Gold won each of the three sets played by at least a seven-point margin, with the biggest difference a 25-14 win in the opener as the visitors scored 12 of the final 16 points. That momentum carried into set two as the Chargers broke out to a 10-2 lead early on. A 6-3 run late in the second put a comeback just out of reach for the Dolphins, who fell 25-17. The third stanza would be the closest of the three, but another early set push gave New Haven a 13-5 advantage that would all but put the match away, with the final score in set three, 25-17.

Overall, the Chargers hit .245 for the match, converting 42 of 110 total attempts. Leading the attack was junior outside Emily Barry (Freeport, N.Y./Sacred Heart Academy) who was the only player for either side to finish with double-digit kills, tallying 14 to extend her conference leading mark. The usual suspects followed suit for the New Haven offense with senior right-side Jessica Akiona (Kapolei, Hawaii/La Pietra- Hawaii School for Girls) hammering nine and freshman outside Macy Brown (Cadillac, Mich./Cadillac) who powered eight.

Senior middle Asiya Way (Denver, Colo./Denver East) dropped seven kills of her own for the night, while freshman setter Sophia Leon-Tabor (Fort Myers, Fla./Fort Myers) spread the wealth to five different players finishing with 31 assists in addition to contributing a trio of kills. As a team the Blue and Gold handed out an even 40 helpers, with Brown and sophomore Rilee Jessee (Edinburgh, Ind,/Columbus East) providing four apiece, and Barry providing one.

Defensively, three players corralled ten or more digs, paced by 14 from Jessee, 13 by way of Akiona, and 12 courtesy of Brown, while collecting 60 for the match. At the net, sophomore Emily Smith (Chesterfield, Mich./Anchor Bay) providing five blocks assists to lead the team.
