WEST HAVEN, Conn. – The New Haven women's volleyball team dropped a 3-1 decision against Bentley Saturday in the final match of the regular season. The Chargers fall to 20-8 overall and 10-3 in Northeast-10 Conference play heading into the postseason.
As a team the Blue and Gold converted 47 of its 173 total attempts on the attack for kills, assisting on all but two of those plays, with freshman setter Sophia Leon-Tabor (Fort Myers, Fla./Fort Myers) leading the way with 35, followed by senior right-side Jessica Akiona (Kapolei, Hawaii/La Pietra- Hawaii School for Girls) who finished with five assists along with 13 kills and a service ace. Pacing the offense was junior outside Emily Barry (Freeport, N.Y./Sacred Heart Academy) who slammed a game-best 19 kills along with a pair of assists, and freshman outside Macy Brown (Cadillac, Mich./Cadillac) rounded the trio of players with double digits on the attack with 11.
Long rallies led to big numbers across the board with as the Chargers collected 97 digs on the night led by Brown who corralled a match-high 25 digs, leading a group of five New Haven players who collected 13 or more digs. Leon-Tabor finished second on the team with 19 receptions, followed by Akiona with 18, Barry with 16, and sophomore libero Rilee Jessee (Edinburgh, Ind,/Columbus East) with 13. At the net three different players collected a solo block, and with a pair of assists on defense sophomore middle Emily Smith (Chesterfield, Mich./Anchor Bay) led the way with two total blocks.
The Blue and Gold will await the official announcement of the 2021 NE10 Volleyball Championship bracket, with quarterfinal action set to begin on Tuesday.
