SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The New Haven women's basketball team dropped their first game of the season this year in a 65-48 loss at Le Moyne on Saturday.
Camryn DeBose (Wellington, Fla./Wellington Community) led New Haven with 14 points despite a season-low for the Chargers.
Brie Pergola (Torrington, Conn./Torrington) finished the game with 11 points, three assists and an offensive rebound. Junior forward
Aurora Deshaies (Syracuse, N.Y./Bishop Ludden) pulled down 14 boards while adding eight points and an assist.
Bionca Chambers (Bronx, N.Y./New Milford) and
Briana Van Cleaf (Staten Island, N.Y./Notre Dame Academy) rounded out the starting five with seven and four points, respectively.
The Dolphins thrived in the paint, outrebounding the Chargers, 50-36, leading to two Le Moyne double-doubles. The Dolphins pulled in 22 offensive rebounds to outscore New Haven in the paint, 26-20, despite only scoring 13 points on second chance opportunities. Deshaies feel to second in the conference in rebounds with an average of 12.8 rebounds per game. Van Cleaf continues to attack the boards, pulling in six in the contest to place her ninth overall with 7.3 rebounds per game. Pergola's three assists in the game and 15 overall, contributed to her 3.8 assists per game four seventh best in the NE10.
As a whole, the squad shot 16-56 (28.6%) from the field, while going 3-14 (21.4%) from beyond the arc. Free throws were vital in the loss as the Dolphins went 22-29 (75.9) from the line as opposed to New Haven's 13-16 (81.3%). The defense only forced 14 turnovers, led by Chambers who racked up two steals and one blocks. All together, the team finished the game with nine steals and two blocks, with DeBose and Pergola tallying two steals a piece. Le Moyne was able to score more points on turnovers, however, 13-6, while also scoring more fast break points, 17-4.
FIRST HALF
- The Chargers jumped out to an early 12-2 lead before reaching their highest lead of 16 points at 1:55 when the score was 23-7 New Haven
- The Charger's offense stalled out in the second quarter, scoring only three points while allowing Le Moyne to storm back and take a nine point lead with 35 seconds left in the half.
- The lone three came from Pergola to end a 21-0 run by the Dolphins with 17 seconds left in the half.
- DeBose led the Chargers on offense with eight points while recording a rebound and a steal.
- Pergola ended the half with seven points, two assists, a rebound and a steal.
- Deshaies racked up six rebounds while Van Cleaf grabbed four.
- The Chargers only saw a combination of five different players make baskets.
- Pergola and Van Cleaf both put up four points in the first quarter, the later was held scoreless on one attempted three in the second quarter.
- Chambers put up six points in the first half while adding two rebounds and an assist.
- DeBose knocked down two three pointers within the first three minutes of play.
- The team shot 10-27 (37%) from the field, while shooting 3-10 (30%) from beyond the arc.
- The Chargers only drew two four throw attempts in the first half, making three of them.
- Both squads scored 14 points in the paint before the half, with Le Moyne taking a slight 6-5 edge in second chance points.
SECOND HALF
- Deshaies led the second half effort for the Chargers with seven points and eight rebounds while recording a block, as well.
- DeBose dropped six points with two rebounds and another steal.
- Pergola tallied four points, an assist and a steal in the second half.
- Azure Riley (Windsor, Conn./Windsor) saw action, scoring two points and grabbing two boards.
- Bianca Pendleton (Accokeek, Md./New Hope Academy) scored two points, both on free throws, while adding a steal.
- Gabrielle Stickle (Syracuse, N.Y./Jamesville-DeWitt) tallied a rebound and a steal.
- The Chargers were outrebounded 22-14Â in the second half.
- As a squad, the Chargers shot 6-29Â (20.6%) from the field in the second half, including 0-4 rom three, while converting 10 free throws on 12 attempts.
- The Dolphins shot 8-25 (32%) shooting and 2-6 (33.3%) from three while going 14-18 from the line.
